What would your ideal street look like?

What would your dream street look like? Would it have separated protected bikeways? A lane for each mode of transportation – car, bike, ped, bus? Or would it be car-free? Whatever you dream up, you can now visualize your designs using the Streetmix online app!

Put together as a labs project by a group of 2013 Code for America fellows, Streetmix is an interactive street section builder, which creates  2D non-perspectival drawings commonly used in engineering and architecture to visualize road infrastructure.

“In community meetings, one engagement activity is to create cut-out sheets of paper depicting different street components (like bike lanes, sidewalks, trees, etc.) and allow community members to reassemble them into their desired street structure. Planners and city officials can then take this feedback to determine a course of action for future plans. By creating an web-based version of this activity, planners can reach a wider audience than they could at meetings alone, and allow community members to share and edit each other's creations,” the website states.

While still in progress, the app isn’t just a fun tool, the developers aim to be part of the national conversation around Complete Streets or the Project for Public Spaces' Rightsizing Streets Guide.
