Schemata Workshop hosts monthly commute station this summer in Capitol Hill

Bike to Work Day comes but once a year, but as architecture and design firm Schemata Workshop demonstrates, the spirit of Bike to Work Day can live on all year round.  Every last Friday of the month this summer, Schemata Workshop will host a commute station with free bagels for bicyclists from 7 to 8:30 a.m. in front of their Capitol Hill office at 1720 12th Ave.

During Bike Month, Schemata teamed up with Eltana Bagels and hosted a Do-It-Yourself commute station offering bagels, coffee, and encouragement to bike commuters on F5 Bike to Work Day. The staff enjoyed hosting the station so much that they have decided to continue the station through at least August 2012.

Intern architect and bike commuter James Underwood explains why Schemata values and supports bicycling both within their organization and in the community.

As an office, we have a high interest in sustainable commuting in general. Almost all of us commute by either bicycle, bus, or walk. We’re working with Sound Transit on various light rail stations, including the Northgate and Roosevelt stations, and are also working with the UW to create a new standard modular bicycle shelter design to help meet their growing bike parking needs. We’re also working on a project at our own location at 1720 12th Ave, creating a 12 unit urban cohousing community with no on-site parking, committing to a more car-free culture by making the choice to rely more on public transit.

We’re doing the bagel pit-stop as a way to advocate for cycling as a normal mode for transportation for the average commuter. It was great to chat with our neighbors in the community when we held the Bike to Work Day DIY commute station, so we thought it would be even better to continue it through the summer!'

Stop by the commute station on June 29,  July 27, and August 31 from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at 1720 12th Ave (they share a building with Lucky Devil Tatoo parlor), grab a bagel, thank Schemata for supporting bike commuting in the community, and enjoy your ride!

How does Bike to Work Day live on at your organization?  Have you set up your own commute station, organized a bike-buddy system, encouraged a friend or co-worker to try bike-commuting, or participated in other programs?
