High Performance Cycling

Cascade’s High Performance Cycling Team (HPC) is intended for cyclists who like to ride fast, hard, far, and climb hills in a non-racing environment. The team is dedicated to supporting strong cyclists who want to improve their skills and fitness while practicing safe group cycling techniques.

The team is divided into two groups:

Expert: Cyclists who already possess the bike handling skills and fitness to safely ride in a rotating paceline at a strenuous effort level, and the endurance to ride at least 50 miles.

Development: Cyclists with a goal of becoming an expert cyclist, and who desire the support of stronger riders and coaching to help them get there.

Riders self-select which group to join. Riders who start a team ride with the expert group and find the pace too difficult can fall back and join the development group.

Depending on turnout for a particular ride, there may also be an Hors Catégorie (beyond categorization) group for riders who desire to ride at a super-strenuous level.

Team membership includes:

  • Priority registration (event fees not included) for the High Pass Challenge
  • Annual fitness testing and evaluation to establish power and/or heart rate based training zones ($85 value)
  • Team skills clinics open only to the HPC team. Most clinics feature a coaching session from a Cycle U coach, followed by a team ride ($75 value)
  • Discounts on cycling products including: Felt, Garmin, Hammer, Honey Stinger Saris & CycleOps, Shimano Footwear, Shimano Packs, Shimano Pedals, Shimano Wheels, Specialized, Speedplay, Tifosi
  • 20% Discount on CycleU retail products

Team Skills Clinics and Monthly Team Rides

Clinics are conducted once a month during the spring and summer months and are announced via the members-only team message board. Topics may include specific riding skills, or equipment related themes. The skills clinics are followed by a team ride geared towards practicing the new skills learned on the road. For a taste of what these clinics are like, read a Seattle P-I cycling blog report about a paceline clinic held in August 2009.

Informal Team Rides

Team rides happen most weekends (weather permitting) and are led by experienced team members from both the “expert” and “development” groups. Details including distance and route about each week’s team ride are announced via the team message board.

Meet the Team Rides

Periodically, we host “Meet the team” rides, which are social rides open to any interested cyclists as a way to meet team members and to see if HPC is for them. Meet the team rides start at Pert’s Deli in Leschi and dates are posted in Cascade’s ride calendar.

In addition to the scheduled team rides, many team members will ride together at major regional cycling events including Flying Wheels, Seattle to Portland, and the High Pass Challenge.
