Thank you for helping to 'Build a Safer Stone Way'Last summer, Cascade Bicycle Club and others called upon the Seattle Department of Transportation to study traffic patterns on Stone Way to assess the viability of a north bound (up hill) bike lane from N. 34th St. to N. 40th. Cascade also spent months collecting traffic pattern data. This week, with the completion of their study, SDOT announced that it will reconfigure the roadway to include the bike lane! "Our analysis of roadway usage and traffic patterns supports this new configuration...[allowing] users of all types a safe and efficient route of travel" said SDOT Director Grace Crunican. The new Stone Way embodies "the spirit of [Seattle's] Complete Streets ordinance" she said. The ordinance was shepherded through the Seattle City Council last year by a coalition of organizations lead by Cascade. Clearly our advocacy made a difference for the thousands of people who bike, walk, live and work in this neighborhood! Please join me in thanking Mayor Nichols and Director Crunican for working to create a bicycle friendly community. |

Bicycles and StreetcarsAnother situation we are watching closely is the South Lake Union streetcar. We are pleased that Seattleites have a new transit option. Unfortunately, some local cyclists have found out that streetcar tracks and bicycles can be a painful combination. Join us Tuesday March 11 for a special presentation by transportation officials from Portland, Oregon as we discuss how they have blended bikes and transit, and how you can stay safe as Seattle's streetcar network expands. When: Tuesday March 11, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. When you bike, you help create a better community, one that is healthy, green and safe. Let's keep working together! Chuck Ayers, executive director P.S. I hope to see you at Expo this weekend a new location, Pier 30 downtown Seattle, Saturday March 8, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday March 9, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. |
