Start a Bike to School program in your community!

Year-round bicycle commuter Clara may be a fifth-grader, but she’s wise beyond her years. Clara had this to say about biking to school: “We all live in a community, and it is up to us to take care of it. Biking to school makes me feel like I’m doing something good for the earth. If you bike to school one time, it makes you want to do it again and again.”

This May, Clara and thousands of kids across the country will take part in Bike to School Month. Now more than ever, it is important to provide our kids with the opportunity and encouragement to develop life-long healthy habits by biking or walking to school. One great way to make bicycling more approachable for diverse riders is a Bike to School program.

Have you thought about starting a program like this in your school or community? We’d like to help.

Cascade Bicycle Club and Washington Bikes have partnered to encourage new leaders and support Bike to School programs already in motion across the state. As part of that mission, we’re providing a free workshop Saturday, Feb. 8 for community leaders interested in fostering bicycle culture in schools.

At this workshop you’ll learn how to start a Bike to School program, organize and lead a bike train, and how to engage the community in your efforts. Below is a workshop schedule. Participants may attend as many or as few sessions as they choose.

  • 10:30-noon: How to start a Bike to School program & funding sources
  • Noon-1 p.m.:  Bike train training
  • 1 - 2 p.m.:  How to organize a Bike Rodeo community event

The workshop is ideal for parents, teachers, school administrators, public health officials, and community leaders—anyone interested in fostering active transportation to schools. Leaders from Northshore, Lake Washington, and Seattle school districts have already signed up to attend.

Join us for a great conversation, and let us know how we can better support you in fostering active bicycle culture in your community.
