Youth Programs Assistant

Emily Kotz

Wheels:  A Trek Alpha road bike and a Trek mountain bike

Commute: Seven miles from Capital Hill

Favorite Ride: Riding through Benzie County, Michigan, around Mackinaw Island and riding on Lake Shore Drive during the Chicago Triathlon.

Emily is from Okemos, Michigan where she grew up learning to love all manner of wheeled activities. At the age of 11, she taught herself how to ride a unicycle in her driveway, not thinking skateboarding or bicycling around her neighborhood’s cul-de-sac was enough. She comes to Cascade ready to share that same enthusiasm when educating youth on mastering their bike safety skills.

A recent graduate from Kalamazoo College, Emily earned her BA in English and Environmental Studies, and became involved with recreational and environmental youth service programs beginning in her freshman year. It wasn’t until living without a car in Kalamazoo that Emily realized how much she values being able to safely ride her bike. This led her to pursue an AmeriCorps position with Cascade, knowing that she would be able to work on making bike safety education a priority.

Emily enjoys hiking, soccer, triathlons, writing, documentaries, skiing, swimming, cross country running and biking. She is so happy to be spending the next year working at Cascade for AmeriCorps.
