Virtual STP FAQ

HOW TO TAKE PART

Follow these steps:

  • We'll provide a link on July 1.
  • Register for free by selecting "Register" in the upper right hand corner.
  • Plan your route and form your virtual teams between July 1 and August 6
  • Log your miles between July 18 and August 6.

TEAM SIZES

There is no limit to team sizes for the Kaiser Permanente Seattle to Portland Virtual Challenge. This is a personal challenge and there is no winner. We encourage you to recruit family across the world, coworkers, neighbors, and high school rivals.

This is a great time to encourage new riders, who may not have considered riding a 200-mile event in one or two days, but who would find a great challenge in biking ten miles each day for 20 days in a row.

PLANNING A ROUTE

  • Plan a route that takes you no further than what you can support on your own. Stay self-sufficient by bringing snacks, water, and a flat kit with you.
  • Know what phase your county is in
  • Avoid crowded multi-use recreational trails.
  • Keep it interesting. Plan several loops in a clover-leaf pattern that always bring you back home.
  • Keep it simple. Find a route from Cascade that's in your county and throw it into the mix.
  • Need some community support? Join the Kaiser Permanente Seattle to Portland Facebook group.

EARNING POINTS

Riders will earn points for all modes, whether indoors or outdoors.

One mile equals one point.

Earning points helps you to achieve badges, which mark off milestones along the traditional STP route.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING?

  • Free for everyone
  • Loads of pedal-powered camaraderie
  • It's a great way for new STP riders to test their endurance.
  • Bragging rights. Period. Who else does this stuff?

NEW TO RIDING?

Where to Ride

Washington is the #1 most bike friendly state in the country! That doesn’t mean that every road is right for you - you can identify corridors with dedicated facilities using Google Maps' bicycle route feature. If you would like a copy of Seattle Department of Transportation's (SDOT) bike map contact our partners at Cascade Bicycle Club, info@cascade.org.

SDOT has made 20 miles of Stay Healthy Streets available to keep people moving safely and at a distance through neighborhoods.

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) provides a central hub of local and regional maps of bicycle trails and routes.

Consider what's right out your front door. Often small residential streets offer low traffic speeds and limited motor vehicle traffic, making them great places to get in a short ride or to use as connections to get to a nearby destination. They're not always direct, but that's perfect - you'll have the roads to yourself!

For additional information on riding in and around the Washington region, please contact us at info@cascade.org.
