Ride Description:

After a couple of weeks of bad weather we will try and get the sixth South End Winter Hills Training ride out of the parking lot.  The ride start is Old Renton City Hall in Renton.  My intention is to post these rides each week with increasing mileage and elevation.  There are no restrooms at the start so please come prepared.  There are restroom stops at approximately 8 and 36 miles.

Registration: Please register for this ride in advance by clicking on the red "Register Now" button at the top of this page.  Online registrations are accepted until 6:30 am on the morning of the ride.  After that, riders must register at the ride start. In addition, those who register in advance, please check in at the ride start to verify attendance.

Ride Start Details: Ride will start promptly at 9:00 am.  Please arrive early enough to set up, check in and/or sign the ride waiver, and participate in the ride overview and Cascade SMART talk.  If you are a new rider to Cascade Free Group Rides, we welcome you! Please read the Cascade Bicycle Club newcomers information by clicking on the Newcomers hot link at the top of this page, right above the Register Now button.

Ride Requirements:  If desired, please print off and bring a cue sheet. We will NOT have copies at the start.  Please be knowledgeable and equipped with tubes, pump, etc to handle flats or minor mechanicals. Depending on the size of the group, we may not always be able to stop for mechanicals. If roads are wet, bikes without FULL rear fenders & mud flaps are a safety issue for other riders. You will be asked to ride at the rear of the group if conditions warrant and you are not properly equipped.

Regroups: We regroup at the top of major hills and at major turns for a reasonable amount of time. This is a training ride so we will ride with the best interest of the group in mind.  You should be prepared with a cue sheet or other device to navigate back to the start should you be unable to continue

Cancellation: Steady rain (or unsafe conditions such as ice, snow or high winds)  will cancel this ride. In the event of a cancellation, a notice will be posted at least two hours prior in the comments section below.  Please check here before going to the ride start.

A good headlight and taillight are recommended. Helmets are required to ride.

Comments

Weather continues to be a bugger.  Drove the route today and portions in May Valley, Tiger Mountain, and Renton Highlands have a lot of snow in the shoulders and would make the ride unsafe.  I am looking at an alternate route toward the west .  It will not have as much elevation but it will be a ride.  Stay tuned.

I drove parts of route yesterday and this morning and while the roads are clear in many places there is still a lot of snow on the shoulders in Maple Valley, the Renton Highlands, May Valley and on Tiger Mountain.  There is also a lot of fallen tree limbs and sand on the road.  While I might consider riding on my own, I just don't want to take the chance of leading others in to a high risk situation.  I am sorry about having to cancel again but old man winter has really been a thorn this month.  Keep an eye on the calendar, I am going to continue to post if the road conditions improve.
