Ride Description:

Are you new to bicycling, or just been off your bike for awhile? Is 2019 your year to get active, begin commuting, take part in the Free Group Rides, or maybe even tackle your first century (100 mile ride), the STP, or another personal challenge? Are you a bit unsure about your biking capabilities, riding in groups, or cycling during winter? If so, then the Getting Ready to Ride Series (GR2R) is for you. GR2R is an early season, eight-week progressive series that adds a bit of elevation gain, distance or technical difficulty each week.

GR2R rides are free and open to anyone. You will ride with others who share your pace and enthusiasm for riding. All rides will be led by Cascade Ride Leaders.  They are experienced volunteers who enjoy riding, are knowledgeable about bike safety and the rules of the road, and who know the routes.

During the North End Series, we will primarily explore Snohomish County (often with great views) and take advantage of some of the trails, less traveled country roads and neighborhood streets. These will be social, stay-together rides with waits at the top of hills and at all critical turns, along with some photo-op stops.

The ride this week will start from Paine Field Community Park and ride South toward Lynnwood. We will go to the Lynnwood Park and Ride where we get on the Interurban Trail and ride North to Silver Lake and then back along 112th Street to Paine Field Park.

In addition to steady rain, ice/snow and any other hazardous conditions will cancel a ride. If a ride is canceled due to hazardous conditions, a notice will be posted here, in the Comments section below, by 8:00 AM on the day of the ride.  If that notice is posted, the ride leaders will not be at the start.

Ride Notes: All riders should bring ID; spare tube, tools, patch kit, pump, and skills to fix flats; a phone and a plan for rescue if your bike fails; and snacks and water.  Waiting for flat tire repair or mechanical issues will be at the discretion of the ride leader. It’s winter, so please dress appropriately and use fenders with long mudflaps on your bike.   Please arrive at least 20 minutes early (9:40 AM) to get yourself ready, listen to the safety briefing, and sign or check the waiver. 10:00 AM is roll-out time!

We will post the final version of the route and cue sheet a few days prior to the ride date in the Comments section below.

Pre-registering online: Please preregister for this ride online by clicking on the red Register Now button at the top of this page and entering your information. Preregistering saves time at the beginning the ride and provides legible emergency contact information. And if you cannot make the ride, you do not need to un-register.

You are probably wondering why I am posting early in the week when it is snowing for a Saturday ride. I haven't ridden since the 3rd and this may be my first opportunity so I am excited. The weather keeps changing but it looks like it is warming and may even be dry this weekend. The biggest issue may be the condition of the bike lanes with snow, slush, sand, gravel and who knows whatever may have fallen off of cars or people and got buried. There is also a lot of parts on the Interurban Trail and that may not be clear by Saturday morning (see the route above). Keep your fingers crossed for warmer temperatures and check back here later in the week.

Thanks to Larry for riding and providing input on the route. I drove the route after work tonight and the roads are not good for riding yet, and the Interurban Trail is still covered in snow. We will hope for better conditions next week.
