Getting Ready to Ride - Eastside #8
If you are new, please read our newcomer information.
Are you new to bicycling or have you been off your bike for a while? Is 2018 your year to get active, begin bike commuting, take part in Cascade's Free Group Rides, or maybe even tackle your first metric or full century (i.e., 62 and 100-mile rides), the STP, or another personal challenge? Perhaps you a bit unsure about your capabilities, riding in groups, or riding during winter?
If so, then the Getting Ready to Ride Series (GR2R) is for you. GR2R is an early season, eight-week progressive series that begins with a very doable first ride and then adds a bit of elevation gain, distance, or technical difficulty each week. GR2R will help you to:
• Increase endurance and confidence
• Build hill-climbing skills
• Make new friends in the cycling community
• Gain confidence riding safely with groups
• Get ready for the 2018 Cascade Training Series, which begins in April
GR2R rides are free and open to any rider. You will ride with others who share your pace level and your enthusiasm for riding. All rides will be led by Cascade Ride Leaders, experienced volunteers who enjoy riding and are knowledgeable about bike safety, the rules of the road, and the routes.
In the Eastside series, in addition to becoming familiar with bicycling and gaining fitness, you will learn group riding skills while exploring different Eastside communities. This will be a social, stay-together ride with waits at the top of hills and all critical turns, along with photo-op stops along the way.
General Ride Notes: Steady rain, ice/snow, and any other hazardous conditions will cancel a ride. If a ride is canceled, it will be posted here, in the comment section below, and on the Cascade page by 9:00 a.m. If that notice is posted, the ride leaders will not be at the start.
Helmets are required for these rides. All riders should come equipped to deal with their own mechanicals (e.g., spare tube, tire levers, pump, etc.) and bring enough snacks and water. Waiting for mechanicals will be at the discretion of the ride leader.
If ride conditions are wet, please come equipped with fenders that have long "buddy flaps" (described in the link below) as a courtesy to your fellow riders, or you will be required to ride at the back of the group.
Arrive at least 20 minutes early (10:40 a.m.) so that you can get yourself ready, sign the waiver, and listen to the S.M.A.R.T. briefing (10:50 a.m.). Our roll-out time is 11 a.m.! (Please be on time. Riders not present for the safety briefing will not be allowed to ride with the group.)
We will post the final version of the route and cue sheet a few days prior to the ride date in the comment section below. Printed cue sheets will be available at the start and all riders are expected have one (even if you have a smartphone or Garmin GPS). Draft route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26686432
Specific Route Notes: This is the last GR2R event and is intended to wind things down a bit before some of you begin the Cascade Training Series (CTS) starting in April. There is a proper rest room at the start of this ride, just up the trail from the parking lot. This is the classic, clockwise loop around Mercer Island. Mercer Island is a fun ride with lots of curving roads, scenic views, and gently rolling hills - surely something you'll return for again and again over the summer. To make things interesting you'll also ride across I-90 to the viewpoint for a triumphant group picture and then ride back across the bridge to Luther Burbank Park. If you haven't done so previously this is a good opportunity to get a coffee or a bite to eat after the ride, with companions of course, to regale your fellow riders with fun memories from the series as well as exhange contact information before CTS begins. (You never know, some of the people you rode with early in the season may end up becoming your best cycling buddies! It's happened before....)
Pre-registering online: If you have a Cascade account, you can pre-register for this ride online by clicking on the Register button at the top of this page and entering your information. Pre-registering saves time at the beginning of the ride and provides legible emergency contact information. If you cannot make the ride, you do not need to un-register.
