Here in Seattle, people want a community where it's safe for families to ride their bicycles. And we know that if neighbors work together, we can create a better world for our children.

But we're up against powerful forces that threaten our safety, whether it's the special interests that have delayed the completion of the Missing Link or hit-and-run drivers on dangerous roads that make bicycling perilous.

One leader has consistently worked for what neighbors want. and Seattle's values. Whether it's the Missing Link, building protected bike lanes and neighborhood greenways, or launching educational efforts, Mayor McGinn is a proven leader for bicycling who stands up for Seattle's values.

It's time to stand up for him.

Last week I asked what you -- as Cascade supporters -- wanted the most in Seattle.

We had an overwhelming response. The top priority was completing the Missing Link (31 percent), followed by protected bike lanes on Westlake and Eastlake (17 percent), and downtown on 2nd and 4th Avenues (17 percent). A few people emailed me directly and asked for better street maintenance, improved designs and implementation of bike lanes, and more education of drivers and bicyclists.

And here's something you should know and be proud of: Mayor Mike McGinn has spent his first four years in office championing each of these efforts. Here's a quick run down of McGinn's accomplishments for bicycling:

    - Defended the completing Missing Link against litigation brought by special interest groups, then moved the project forward outside of the courtroom by pursuing a full environmental analysis. Currently the administration is finalizing interim measures to improve the safety along the route.
    - Helped secure regional and city funding to complete protected bike lanes on Westlake Avenue and championed studying Eastlake Avenue for transit and bike corridor improvements.
    - Includes funding for downtown protected bike lanes in his upcoming budget proposal to city council.
    - Currently overhauling the city's bicycle master plan with more emphasis on higher quality, better designed bike infrastructure instead of the sharrows and bike lanes that are too narrow.
    - Launched "Walk Bike Ride," "Be Super Safe," and a road safety summit to educate bicyclists and drivers on the rules of the road and to encourage more bicycling.

Running a city is hard work and a thankless task. But when push comes to shove, Mayor Mike McGinn stands up for bicycling and Seattle's values. Let's get McGinn re-elected.
