This fall, SDOT kicked off a new Safe Routes to School program at Aki Kurose Middle School with great success. The program, a six-week after-school bike club for Aki students, focused on bicycle maintenance and safe urban riding skills.
Students borrowed bicycles from Bike Works, and decorated helmets donated by Cascade Bicycle Club, adding a little individual flare with stenciled names and reflective stickers.
During the course of the program, students learned how to patch inner tubes, how to ride safely, and plan routes on a city bicycle map.
After weeks of skills and drills, students were ready for a ride, and along with adult leaders, they formed a bicycle train and rode around the nearby park.
SDOT reports that both students and adult members are anxious for the spring club to begin!
