Break out the champagne...
Vulnerable User Bill passes!

It's official! After three legislative sessions of hard work by Cascade and other supporters, Washington Governor Christine Gregoire signed the Vulnerable User Bill into law on May 16. Several Cascade staff, along with victims of negligent drivers and their families, stood during the signing with the bill's sponsor, Senator Adam Kline, and Representative Joe Fitzgibbon, who introduced a companion bill in the state House. Also present was outgoing Advocacy Director David Hiller, whose tireless work played a gigantic role in this victory. The law will go into effect one year from tomorrow: June 1, 2012.

F5 Bike to Work Day a HUGE success

Friday, May 20 was one of those glorious days that only the Pacific Northwest can deliver. Bluebird skies, a fresh breeze and tens of thousands of bicyclists reveling in the simple pleasure of riding a bicycle to work. We reckon that over 22,000 folks rode to work in our region on Friday, a 38 percent increase over 2010. To keep the momentum building, Cascade is working hard every day of the year to ensure that conditions* continue to favor bike commuting, from family-friendly infrastructure to high-quality parking and showers at work.

In other news, today is the last day of Bike Month 2011. We invite all participants in the Group Health Commute Challenge to join us at the Pyramid Brewery celebration.

*Sorry, for now we cannot control the weather.

EVENTS

Flying Wheels Summer Century
Saturday, June 11
Marymoor Park, Redmond, WA

Flying Wheels Summer Century is a celebration of summer cycling and the largest event of its kind in Washington state. Enjoy rural scenery on one of four loops -- 25-, 45-, 65- or 100-miles -- and then, after the ride, get a massage, grab a sausage or some Thai food, and kick back in the New Belgium beer garden.

Register online by June 1 at 11:59 p.m. and we'll mail your packet to you -- after that, you'll need to pick it up at the start line. See you there!

Attention STP hopefuls:
Bid for registrations on eBay
& support a great cause

On Friday, June 10, bidding will close in our eBay auction of registrations for the Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic. Two registrations are currently up for bidding. Place your bid now, before time runs out.

All eBay auction winners will receive a coveted low bib number. We're also throwing in free food and beverages at the Finish Line Festival in Portland. Plus, the amount of any winning bid exceeding the usual $100 STP registration fee is a tax-deductible donation to the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation.

STP registration may or may not reopen to the public at 10 a.m. on June 13 with returned registrations. Bid in our auction to increase your chances of riding. (Remember, any rider wishing to take advantage of the Group Health STP refund policy has until Thursday, June 9 at 11:59 p.m.)

Spots still available for RSVP2 and RAW

The STP might be sold out, but we do still have open spots for RSVP2 and RAW, Ride Around Washington.

The two-day RSVP2 will take you over scenic back roads to Vancouver, B.C., while RAW is a weeklong vacation with deluxe camping, three delicious meals a day, friendly companionship and the chance to pick just the right pace. One of these events is sure to satisfy your urge to see the world on two wheels. Register for RSVP2 or RAW today.

BICYCLE FILM SERIES

With My Own Two Wheels
Friday, June 16, 7 p.m.
REI Seattle, 222 Yale Ave N

Tickets available in advance at Brown Paper Tickets.
Cascade members: $5; general public: $7

Benefit for World Bicycle Relief and Cascade's Major Taylor Project, featuring a post-film Q&A with filmmaker Jacob Seigel-Boettner and representatives from each group.

With My Own Two Wheels documents the importance of bicycles in the lives of five individuals across the globe -- in Zambia, Ghana, India, Guatemala and California. Unlike many travel documentaries, which follow cyclists who have the money to travel to exotic locations for adventure, this film features breathtaking imagery of cycling abroad through the eyes of the locals. After watching, you'll have a whole new respect for your bike and its ability to create positive change in the world. [more...]
