Cascade Bicycle Club
Braking News

May blew in like a lion this year, full of gusty headwinds (or tailwinds, depending on your direction) and chilly temperatures. We know that won't deter you from getting on your bikes and having a great time at all the upcoming Bike Month events.

Register for the Group Health Commute Challenge

It's been a bumpy start, and we thank you all for your patience. The 2010 Group Health Commute Challenge is back open! Register yourself, form a team and track your miles. Riders caught commuting with an event spoke card might get pulled over by the Prize Patrol and awarded prizes on the spot.

Bike to School

Kids, parents and teachers, May is also Bike to School Month. Get your school involved by signing up on the Bike to School webpage. Every time a student rides, they'll be entered in a drawing to win fantastic prizes! Please visit our Bike to School Facebook page for updates on happenings at area schools.

Save Friday, May 21 for F5 Bike to Work Day

On Friday, May 21, everyone across the Puget Sound region can share the benefits of biking to work and help show our leaders that we want more safe, convenient bicycle facilities around the region. From 6 to 9 a.m., riders can stop by one of 44 commute stations to get a bicycle check-up, enter a drawing, and pick up a water bottle, snacks, maps, and other items. Then join Mayor McGinn and city council members at a 7:30 a.m. rally at Seattle City Hall followed by an awesome group photo on the steps of City Hall. The event ends with a rockin' after party in downtown Ballard at 4 p.m.

We have many plans in the works for F5 Bike to Work Day, coming in the next Braking News. If you're on Facebook, stay updated on the event and invite your friends to join you in biking to work.

How has bicycle commuting changed your life?

Every year during Bike Month, we get calls from the media who want to meet bike commuters with special stories. We know many of you are biking out there with amazing stories of how bicycling has had a positive impact on your life. Contact us if you're willing to share them with a larger audience.

Seattle REI, 222 Yale Street
Tickets: $10 ($8 for Cascade members with card)

The April showing of Bicycle Dreams sold out, so we're bringing it back for another run. This film captures the face of those cyclists hell-bent on riding across America on a bicycle in less than ten days. But what begins as the adventure of a lifetime is transformed in an instant when tragedy strikes the race. These voyagers discover what is truly at stake as they pedal on, praying for the deliverance only the finish line can bring. By journey's end, some are saved, others are lost, but all learn that the fuel that takes a soul toward its own true destiny is desire.

Bicycle Dreams has won twelve different film festival awards this year! For more information and additional reviews please visit the film's official website or view the trailer.

At 10,000+ feet, against the misty backdrop of a former mining town, Leadville, Colorado, 1228 cyclists line the starting line. For many, it will be the most difficult race of their lives. For some, a bragging right to say they raced alongside the best in the world. Some imagine victory. Most hope only to finish. But everyone will count. Rivalries include six-time defending champion Dave Wiens vs. international star / seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Stories of human triumph told throughout the film are sure to leave you inspired.

ADVOCACY NEWS

Streets for All Seattle

Cascade Bicycle Club, Sierra Club Cascade Chapter and Great City join a coalition of community, labor, transportation and environmental groups in proudly announcing Streets For All Seattle, a new campaign calling for adequately funding multimodal transportation initiatives in Seattle.

The Streets For All Seattle supporters believe that walking, bicycling and transit should be the easiest means of transportation in Seattle.

All around the country, cities are transforming themselves and building transportation systems that make sense for the future. Aligning their public infrastructure investments with the priorities of their citizens, cities like Salt Lake City, Portland, Denver, Minneapolis, and New York are creating thriving communities where people want to live and businesses choose to locate.

How can you help? Endorse the campaign and let your elected leaders know that you want to see Seattle become the most walkable, bikable and transit-friendly city in America.

ROAD AND TRAIL NEWS

Sammamish River Trail closed through May 14

A portion of Sammamish River Trail just north of Marymoor Park needs repairs, and King County is closing that stretch of the trail through May 14 to ensure continued trail user safety. [more…]

Dearborn Street Repaving

During the week of May 17, repaving work will begin on a major section of S Dearborn Street between Fifth Avenue S and 10th Avenue S. Construction is scheduled to be completed in late July.

During construction, there will be lane closures, but at least one lane on S Dearborn Street will be open for traffic at all times in both directions. Some temporary side street closures and traffic restrictions will be necessary. For more detailed information and to follow the progress of this project, please visit the project web site.

Ballard Bridge Painting

SDOT plans to paint the north and south approaches to the Ballard Bridge in 2010 as part of its Annual Bridge Painting. The painting will provide for enhanced aesthetic appeal as well as protect the steel bridge elements for an additional 15 years against corrosion and other weather deterioration. Construction will likely take place from June to January.

Bicycle detours will be necessary, but we've been informed that one sidewalk will be kept open at all times. With all users being limited to one side at a time, please take extra caution during the painting project. For more information, please visit SDOT's bridge painting project website.
