Update: Burke-Gilman Trail and Lake Forest Park

Good news! On Aug. 9, the Lake Forest Park City Council opted not to appeal a ruling by the Central Puget Sound Growth Management Hearings Board, clearing the way for a long-overdue upgrade of the Burke-Gilman Trail by King County.

Earlier this year, Cascade Bicycle Club went to bat for the Trail and for cyclists by taking this case before the Growth Management Hearings Board. Today we are just $3,934 away from covering our legal expenses. Can you help us?

While $28,439 seems a small price to pay for a precedent-setting case to support cyclists and pedestrians on the Burke-Gilman Trail, it's a big investment for our non-profit organization. We are very grateful to have many gifts to support this landmark work. And, we are asking for your help once again. Please consider a donation to celebrate this victory and to the future of the Trail. Thank you!

Primary Election Endorsements

The Cascade Bicycle Club ventures into politics and elections for one vitally important reason - policies that affect bicycling begin and end with our elected representatives. Our in-depth process involves surveying, evaluating voting records, talking to local activists and, when necessary, interview them face to face.

Critical votes for incumbents spanned a range of issues impacting bicycling, including: child safety, bicycle lanes and trails, transportation funding, land-use and sprawl. Finally, we ask ourselves, "If elected, will they work with us to improve conditions for bicycling?"

Remember, Cascade's endorsement process is strictly non-partisan. [View the endorsements...]

Survive the I5 Closure
Bike, Don't Drive!

Those of you who bike commute regularly may be blissfully unaware of the closures to I5 that started on Aug. 10. But if you're not a regular bike commuter, this may be just the kick in the shorts you need to make the conversion.

Cascade volunteers have created route maps for various commonly used northbound routes most impacted by the closure.

We're also organizing as many Bike Busses as we can. What's a Bike Bus? It's is a group of people who cycle to work in a group. It's called a "bus" because there is a set route and timetable so it can pick up more "passengers" along the way. Interested in "driving" a bus? Contact us to find out how!

Update: Stone Way

Walk and Bike for a Safer Stone Way
On, August 1, more than 300 cyclists crawled through Fremont, protesting the elimination a planned uphill bike lane on Stone Way N between North 34th and North 40th streets. Organized by Seattle Likes Bikes, the ride garnered attention from every media outlet in the region and was cheered on by drivers and neighbors alike.

This Wednesday, Aug. 15, you can Walk and Bike for a Safer Stone Way. Seattle Likes Bikes will be joining with FeetFirst and PedInRoads for another demonstration in favor of the Stone Way road diet. Meet up at Gasworks at 5pm, ride or walk 5:30-6:30.

Hang a Sign to Show Support
Cascade Bicycle Club has also printed hundreds of campaign signs for residents and businesses near Stone Way. Contact us if you can display one in the area. Can you be a messenger for a day by delivering one or more of these signs to a waiting business or resident? Contact Patrick McGrath to volunteer.

Finally, don't forget to contact your elected officials and tell them you care about this project. Ask them to reinstate the Stone Way road diet.
