It's Monica's birthday, and although 50 is a great age for some people, it's pretty sad to see her condition. She remembers having fun on rides that ended at the Kirkland Roaster waaay back in her younger days, but no longer remembers how to get around in Kirkland. So she's asked her good friend David to lead this ride. Come out and support Monica as she takes her aging, sagging body slowly up the hills. Please don't tease her about the gray hair poking through the helmet vents. And we won't drop her-she tends to whine and cry when that happens and might wander off and get lost. We'll tour the Lakefront, streams, a few hills, and the nursing homes and retirement communities of Kirkland, Medina, and the area. Afterwards, we'll have a bite and brew at the Kirkland Ale House and then wheel Monica to her car. For information about the ride, call David. For wandering, aimless conversations about knitting Beatles blankets, the benefits of titanium over carbon fiber for walkers, and a full list of her 42 current aches and pains, call Monica. To see Monica get back at David for this, show up on the ride. Take the Kirkland exit from I-405, head through downtown Kirkland. Turn right at the end of the road onto Market St. Take the first left onto Waverly, and immediately turn left into parking lot. Current 'Good Friend' David Robinson may be reached at 206/979-5784.

First half of the ride is hilly. Lunch stop will be in Kent at the Sub Shop or other restaurants nearby. Second half of the ride is completely flat. Ride pace coming back from Kent will increase to brisk. Route back will be mostly on the trail along the Green River, which becomes the Duwamish River as we get closer to West Seattle. The Green River Trail has very little bike/pedestrian traffic compared to other Seattle trails, making it one of my favorites for group rides. This is one of our favorite island rides! Be forewarned that the terrain is "mostly hilly with a little flat." Allow at least 1-1/4 hours of travel time from Seattle to Camano. The lovely, smooth roads of Camano can be slippery when wet, so consider bringing your mountain bike or putting winter tires on your road bike. Bring money for lunch and snacks. Also, bring rain gear, head- and taillights, and camera (optional). Pack a change of clothing in the car for the ride home.
