Calendar for October 2002

Helmets are required on all Cascade Bicycle Club rides. All the rides are classified according to pace and the type of services provided by the ride leader. In order to pick the rides that suit your skills and energy level, please view the pace guidelines and ride classifications.

Cascade Bicycle Club does not sponsor or endorse any non-bicycling activities that people may participate in while on these rides. You are responsible for your conduct and decisions while on a Cascade ride.

Cascade membership and activities are open to everyone able and willing to participate in a safe and cooperative manner and in support of the purposes of the club.

It is not the practice of the Cascade Bicycle Club to exclude anyone from a club activity as long as they behave in a safe and cooperative manner.

Ride to Poulsbo via Port Gamble and return via Suquamish. Meet for the 10:10 ferry. Park at City Park on 3rd Ave about 1/2 mile south of ferry dock, or on streets not time restricted. Bring or buy lunch at Poulsbo.

Alki Wednesday Night Series

Helmets and lights are always required. Route varies every week. Dinner stop at Pegasus Pizza after the ride. Ride pace is moderate to brisk, depending on riders following the rules of the road. NOTE: October is the last month for this Series until the end of February. After leading these rides every week for over 11 years (Monica) and 8 years (Dan), both of us need a break. Since winter weather easily can be rainy during half of the rides, we'll probably only miss leading 7 or so. We'll also be refreshed and ready to start leading this Series again at the of February - just in time for our pre-Chilly Hilly warm-up ride.

A unique opportunity to take the ferry to Vashon from downtown while the Fauntleroy dock is being repaired; then ride the Island. Departure at 9:00 AM, so plan accordingly.

Kids, bring your parents for a bike ride! We'll ride north on the Burke-Gilman Trail to Tracy Owen Station near Kenmore. We'll play there for about 15 minutes and return to Matthews Beach. Questions? Please call before 8:00pm.

The ride will take us through White Center, Burien and Des Moines; then drop down to Kent for lunch. Return will be a flat route on the Green River and Duwamish Trails. Take Harbor Ave exit off of the West Seattle Bridge. Turn right on Harbor Ave and go 1 mile to park entrance. Park is on the right with a red arch.

A fun afternoon ride for those who attend church in the morning (the saints) or are recovering from last night (the sinners). No need to identify your category. We ride at high-moderate to low-brisk pace. Stop afterwards for a bite and brew.

We will visit Mud Mountain Dam on our way to lunch at 34 miles in Enumclaw; then go by the scenic Green River Gorge on our way back to the cars. Take Auburn-Black Diamond exit off Hwy 18. The Park & Ride is just west of Hwy 18 on Auburn-Black Diamond Road. NOTE: No water or restroom facility at the start.

FRUMPS: Cycle Six Cities of the South

The first part of this ride has some hills-down to Three Tree Point and through Normandy Park on Marine View Drive. After lunch in Kent the ride is flat until we climb to SeaTac from Tukwila for the return to Burien. From I-5 and I-405, take SR-518 west to Burien Park & Ride. The lot is on 4th Ave SW between SW 148th and SW 150th.

Some flat, some hills, some rural, some urban - includes the new bike trail on the bridge into Everett. See views of the waterfront. Bring food. Take Exit 186 east from I-5, go east to the Park & Ride, and park across from the swimming pool.

Lake Wenatchee/Leavenworth/Cashmere

TWO DAYS of riding: Saturday's ride is a loop past Lake Wenatchee, down Tumwater Canyon to Leavenworth for lunch, then returning to Plain via Chumstick Creek. (45 miles) Sunday's ride (10/13) is along the Wenatchee River through orchards to Cashmere and returning to Leavenworth on the other side of the river. (25 miles) Riders staying Saturday night must make own overnight accommodations.

Country Ride Series: Ft. Dent to Black Diamond

A moderately hilly ride to Black Diamond for a great lunch at the famous Black Diamond Bakery. The ride leaders will maintain a pace of 15-17 mph on the flats (High Moderate/Low Brisk). We'll explore the little known Soos Creek Trail and return via Green Valley Rd. and the Green River Trail. Take Exit 1 from I-405. From southbound I-405 go straight at light to Ft. Dent Way, around traffic circle into Park. From northbound I-405 go north on Interurban Ave and right on Ft. Dent Way; then follow as above. We'll meet in the parking lot nearest to the restrooms.

Pull out those one-speed and fixed-gear bikes as we take a socially moderate ride to Redmond on and off the Sammamish River Trail. We may stop in Redmond for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. This is a leisurely/social paces ride. Those who want to go faster are welcome to join us but they will be on their own. We'll go to Renton via Georgetown and Airport Way and return via South Park, using part of the Duwamish and Green River Bike Trails both going and returning. From West Seattle Freeway westbound take Harbor Ave exit. Turn right onto Harbor Ave. Jack Block Park is on the right about 500 ft before Salty's at Alki. Entrance is between the red arches.

Join us for all or part of this weekend of cycling, camping, and kayaking. Contact the ride leader by 10/11 to arrange for SAG support, then just hop on the ferry with your bicycle! We'll be camping at Camp Fire USA's 400-acre Camp Sealth on Vashon - an opportunity not to be missed! We'll be taking the 9:00AM ferry.

Le Tour de Morte

Our 10th annual ever-so-popular pre-Halloween ride, touring 13 cemeteries and other suitable sites. All friendly ghosts, goblins, witches and warlocks are welcome. Costumes are encouraged, but you must be able to ride in them. This is an extremely popular ride-be ready to ride with 50 or more of the scariest and most fun friends. Also, be ready for a few hills--ghosts love their views. Lunch afterward at a ghoulishly good Chinese restaurant. If rain cancels, we'll reschedule for next Saturday, Nov. 2.

Peninsula Metric Century

Plan on catching the 9:30 ferry to Southworth. We will take a scenic ride along the water's edge to Port Orchard, then head south and inland to Gig Harbor for lunch. The ferry schedule may have changed after this ride was submitted, so check the web page for updates or call the ride leader. Lunch will not be until 40 miles into the ride so consider bringing energy food.

Resurrection Sundays Presents Pedalling for Posthumous Pastures

Welcome once again to another edition of cemetery exploration. As we near the night when ghosts and goblins appear to spook us all into giving them treats (scary, isn't it), we'll embark on a journey to once again locate the grave of Baby Monster. (I'm not kidding; just ask someone who rode last year). This year's route will be different than last year's. Take the Rainier Ave/Renton exit from I-405 at the interchange for SR-167, and head north into Renton on Rainier Ave. Move into the right lane after crossing Grady Way, and turn right onto SW 7th St. Continue straight on 7th to Burnett (or follow the detour if construction is still underway). Turn left onto Burnett and follow it around the park. Parking is on the north side of Burnett Linear Park.

Fifth Annual Halloween Treats Ride

Our annual Halloween evening ride. Dress in costume (be sure you can ride in it!) and bring LOTS of individually-wrapped candy to hand out to neighborhood Trick-or-Treaters. The kids (and their parents) love to see a costumed group of riders giving out candy. We'll find someplace warm for food after the ride. Lights required. Bike decorations optional. We leave promptly at 7:00PM.
