Calendar for May 2002

Helmets are required on all Cascade Bicycle Club rides. All the rides are classified according to pace and the type of services provided by the ride leader. In order to pick the rides that suit your skills and energy level, please view the pace guidelines and ride classifications.

Cascade Bicycle Club does not sponsor or endorse any non-bicycling activities that people may participate in while on these rides. You are responsible for your conduct and decisions while on a Cascade ride.

Cascade membership and activities are open to everyone able and willing to participate in a safe and cooperative manner and in support of the purposes of the club.

It is not the practice of the Cascade Bicycle Club to exclude anyone from a club activity as long as they behave in a safe and cooperative manner.

Scenic Training Series

The scenic training series is back for 2002. These weekly Wednesday rides are fast training rides on scenic roads around Monroe, Snohomish, Lake Roesiger, Granite Falls, etc. We'll work hard and climb plenty of hills, but the emphasis will be on finding quiet roads with little traffic. We'll attempt to be a stay together group and a map may be provided for some rides. We'll explore quiet roads in eastern Snohomish County with a different route each week. Meet at noon at Lewis State Park in Monroe (on the east side of Hwy 203 just north of the Skykomish River Bridge).

Alki Wednesday Night Series

Ride leaves promptly at 7:05pm. Helmets and lights are always required. Route varies every week. Ride pace is moderate to brisk, depending on riders following the rules of the road. If people don't follow good rider etiquette, the ride pace will stay as moderate. Dinner stop at Pegasus Pizza after the ride.

STP/RSVP/Long Rides Prep

These rides will be on Tues at 6:00pm and Thurs at 4:00pm May-August. Each will begin with a 30-minute orientation by the ride leader covering a different aspect of training and preparation needed to get in shape to have a successful and enjoyable STP, RSVP or other long ride.The training ride will follow immediately. Riders are expected to be fully prepared to handle whatever Mother Nature or mechanical problems throw at them. Stanwood is approximately one hour north of Seattle on Hwy 532, 6 miles west of I-5.

From I-405 take Exit #5 East and go west, turn onto Lake Washington Blvd, then take next left into Coulon Park - meet in the South Beach parking area.

PDST Admiral Tuesday Night Ride

This ride will be held every Tuesday night during Daylight Savings Time. It will be moderately brisk in the spring, progressing to strenuously brisk in the summer. The routes will vary, and we'll ride through the Bike to Work Day checkpoint at the lower West Seattle Bridge. Two common routes will be to and around Magnolia through Myrtle Edwards Park; and to and around Mercer Island through the I-90 bike tunnel. This will be an urban ride in which commuting skills can be developed. Hamilton Viewpoint Park is on California Ave SW in the North Admiral District of West Seattle.

FRUMPS: Visit the Gorge

We'll start on the Auburn-Black Diamond Road and stop at the fish hatchery for a restroom break if necessary (note: no restroom in the parking lot), and on to the Black Diamond Bakery for an early lunch (we'll beat the crowd). Then it's down to the Green River Gorge for some great views. Return via the Franklin-Enumclaw Road, past Beaver Lake, then back on Green Valley Road. To reach Auburn Park & Ride, drive southbound on I-5, then take Hwy-18 East (Exit 142A). Get off on the Auburn-Black Diamond exit, and go left under Hwy 18 and left again into the lot.

Kids' Ride to Logboom Park

Kids, bring your parents for a bike ride! We will ride north on the Burke-Gilman Trail to Racy Owen Station near Kenmore. We will play there for about 15 minutes and then return to Matthews Beach. If you have any questions, please call before 8:00am.

4th Annual Camano Island Arts and Crafts Tour

The Camano Island area is home to over 50 artists, and almost two dozen sculptors, painters, carvers, glass workers and their studios. We will hop from studio to studio, spending only as much time as is needed for riders to get a feeling for what is available. We will return to the Senior Center for a box meal (bring money) leaving sufficient time for riders to return by car to studios of particular interest. Follow the main highway to the first stoplight, turn right onto Cross Island, and immediately turn right again onto Arrowhead. Entrance to the Center is about two blocks up Arrowhead. Please do not wear cleats into the Center. PLEASE CARRY STREET SHOES FOR WALKING IN THE SR. CENTER AND THE ART STUDIOS.

Happy Mother's Day! A mostly rural ride to Orting--see cows get chased by dogs. Only one really big hill then mostly rolling terrain to lunch. Bring food & water as it is a long way between food stops. All moms will receive a special treat! Take Kent/Des Moines exit off I-5. Go east on Hwy 516 to Kent. Turn left on Meeker, left on Russell Rd to Park on right.

If your mother doesn't live near enough to take out for lunch, send her some flowers and a nice card and join us for this Mother's Day ride. We will take a scenic route past Snoqualmie Falls to the foot of Mt. Si and return via North Bend and Fall City. Bring some money for a lunch stop in North Bend at their bakery/deli. McDonald Park is just south of Carnation on SR203 on the west side of the highway.

To get to the start: from I-405 in Renton, take the Renton-Maple Valley Highway east to 149th Ave SE (just past the Maplewood Golf Course), turn left onto 149th and left again into the Park.

Join me in the Bike To Work Day Celebration Ride. We will ride from the Fremont BTWD location (North side) to the Celebration Ride at Seattle Center where we will join the other riders going to Westlake Center. The last two years the mayor and police chief have accompanied us with a police escort.

This ride takes us from Ft. Dent to Auburn via SeaTac. Long, gradual climb up to S.154th. We will lunch in Auburn before returning to Ft. Dent via Interurban and Green River Trails. From 1-5, take I-405, Exit 1, north on Interurban Ave. Turn right on Ft. Dent Way, then left at traffic circle into the park. Meet by restrooms.

14th Annual Ramrod Training - Issaquah to Snoqualmie Pass

Ride is moved out one week later than usual due to the heavy snowpack this year. Ride will take us through the backroads of Issaquah, to Snoqualmie Falls, North Bend and then up to Snoqualmie Pass. We will stay off of I-90 as much as possible, although we probably won't be able to ride Denny Creek this year due to the heavy snow. There was 8 feet of snow at Denny Creek at the end of March. Snack break at North Bend. Lunch stop at the Pancake House at the Pass. This year, ride leader WILL NOT BE SUPPLYING MAPS. If you want to do a group ride, then stay with the ride leader; otherwise risk getting lost by riding off the front with riders who may not stop and re-group for anyone.

Sno-Mon Loop

Please join us for a joint ride with the Evergreen Tandem Club that follows a scenic rural route through Maltby, Snohomish, and Monroe. Single bikes are always welcome. We will stop at the Snohomish Pie Co, so bring money for goodies and also bring you own food. This is a training ride so we won't linger too long, but we will make plenty of stops for photo ops, restrooms, and snacks. Post-ride brew and eats at the Woodinville Redhook Brewery's Forecasters Pub. Directions: From I-405 take eastbound Exit #23 (SR522 toward Monroe and Wenatchee) to the Woodinville exit. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp and go to NE 175th St (second light). Turn right again, cross the railroad tracks and turn left at the stop sign onto 202nd. Pass Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery on your right, and Columbia Winery, Redhook Brewery, Herbfarm and Willow Lodge on your left. Cross the Sammamish River Bridge and take the next left into the parking lot next to the softball fields (Northshore Sports Complex).

14th Annual Ramrod Training-Cle Elum to Leavenworth

For breakfast, meet at the Pancake House at Snoqualmie Pass at 7:00 am. Otherwise, meet at the start of the ride at 8:30 am. Bakery is on the left side in downtown Cle Elum. If you see the Dairy Queen on the right, the Bakery is about 100 yards farther, on the left. Route will take us over Swauk Pass into Leavenworth. Lunch stop in Leavenworth. Route back will take us over scenic Old Blewett Pass. Dessert stop at Mineral Springs restaurant before making final decent into Cle Elum. Expect 6000 ft. of climbing on this ride.

Fauntleroy Ferry departs at 7:55 a.m. Round Trip Fare for rider and bicycle is $4.30 - Meet on ferry.
