Calendar for May 2001

Helmets are required on all Cascade Bicycle Club rides. All the rides are classified according to pace and the type of services provided by the ride leader. In order to pick the rides that suit your skills and energy level, please view the pace guidelines and ride classifications.

Cascade Bicycle Club does not sponsor or endorse any non-bicycling activities that people may participate in while on these rides. You are responsible for your conduct and decisions while on a Cascade ride.

Cascade membership and activities are open to everyone able and willing to participate in a safe and cooperative manner and in support of the purposes of the club.

It is not the practice of the Cascade Bicycle Club to exclude anyone from a club activity as long as they behave in a safe and cooperative manner.

TREATS: Southern Sojourn

We'll celebrate May Day by touring south along the Green River, then thru the outskirts of Auburn and stop for lunch. Return via Interurban and Green River trails. Directions: Going south on I-5, take exit 154 onto I-405, then exit #1 and go north a short distance on Interurban. Turn right into Ft. Dent and bear left at traffic circle over the bridge to the adjacent parking lot where we will meet.

Scenic rides on the quiet roads between Monroe, Sultan, Granite Falls, Lake Roesiger, Snohomish. Training rides for STP or RAMROD riders with emphasis on scenic routes with little traffic. Mileage and pace to vary and to conform with group comfort.

Kids' Ride to Logboom Park

Kids, bring your parents for a bike ride. We will ride north on the Burke-Gilman Trail to Tracy Owen Station near Kenmore (Logboom Park). We will play there for about 15 minutes and then return to Matthews Beach. For questions, please call before 8:00 PM.

A Taste of Hell

Yes, the Saint is back and ready to ride to hell! This is the annual ride in conjunction with the famed Paris-Roubaix race over the cobblestones, nicknamed The Hell of the North. The race was actually 3 weeks ago, but I was moving, so we're doing it today. Tour some of Seattle's cobblestone streets and scenic, out of the way places. Bring stout wheels (and suspension) a comfy saddle and a willingness to have fun. Lunch afterwards.

Goose Bumps: Going Farther

This month we pick up the distance a little more working toward progressively longer rides as the season goes. If you like to ride low-traffic, back country roads and don't have time for a ferry, these rides are for you. The rides feature two ride leaders with moderate and brisk paces. We will head to the backcountry roads of North King and South Snohomish Counties and into the Snoqualmie Valley. The various routes include the rural communities of Snohomish, Monroe, Carnation, Duvall, etc. Terraiin is evenly divided between hills, flats, and rolling low-traffic country roads. There is a stop for a mid-ride snack. We also provide what are arguably the finest maps/cue sheets in the business. We will conclude the day with a post ride brew or two at the Ale house. In the event of excessive sunshine, the ride will be cancelled; otherwise, we ride!!

For one-day STP riders. Route depends on weather. Pace will vary and may be super-strenuous if conditions are favorable. Paceline skills or willingness to learn pace line riding desirable. Leader will want/need to rest periodically. Bring food! Well-behaved former "Animals" welcome.

We'll take the 10:10 am ferry to Kingston, then on to Pt. No Pt. With lunch at the Nature Conservancy Beach (either bring or buy in Kingston or Pt. No Pt. store). Suggest parking on 3rd Avenue, approx. 4 blocks south of Main St. near the Edmonds City Park. Bike down to terminal to buy ticket and meet at bicycle holding area on dock.

A hilly ride to Black Diamond for lunch. Views and the Soos Creek Trail will be had along the way. Directions to start: Exit #1 I-405. Southbound 405, go straight at light to Ft. Dent Wy around traffic circle into Park. Northbound 405, go north on Interurban Ave, right on Ft. Dent Wy, follow as above. We will meet by the restrooms.

We will meet at the Edmonds Ferry Terminal to take the 9:20 am ferry to Kingston. We will explore the Kitsap Peninsula and have lunch at Poulsbo.

8th Annual RAMROD Training - Issaquah to Snoqualmie Pass

Join us as we take the back roads to Snoqualmie Pass. Route will take us through Fall City, Snoqualmie Falls and North Bend before we ride on I-90. We will stay off of I-90 as much as possible. The last 6 miles to the Pass will be on scenic Denny Creek Road (assuming the snow has melted by May). Expect approximately 5,000 feet of climbing. As of March 24, the road to Snoqualmie Falls is open to cyclists and pedestrians, and closed to cars. Snack break in North Bend and lunch stop at the Pancake House at the Pass. Take exit 15 off I-90 and turn right on state road 900 to the ride. The Park & Ride is at the second light heading south from I-90.

Beat the Ferry Increase

We're taking the 9:00 am ferry! We'll ride along the east side of Shoreline up to Poulsbo for lunch. Return via Agate Pass Bridge to Bainbridge Island to Winslow. We'll have lots of views of the Sound. Hope for sunny weather and enjoy the ride.

Half Lake Loop for Tandems

Ride around the north end of Lake Washington, through Kirkland and Bellevue; cross lake on I-90, ride through Leschi, Washington Park, Arboretum and return to Cascade Bike Club office via the Burke Gilman Trail. This ride is being offered in conjunction with Evergreen Tandem Club (ETC). Singles are always welcome.

A truly scenic and amazing ride, but also long and hilly. See lots of rhododendrons, the Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains in the background. A beautiful ride, but not for wimps. Bring money for the ferry and at least two food stops. Meet at 7:20 am to catch the 7:40 am ferry.

Country Ride Series: Renton - Maple Valley Ride

If your mother doesn't live near enough to take out for lunch, send her some flowers and a nice card and come join us for this Mother's Day ride through the Maple and May Valleys. Depending on turnout, the ride may split into two groups: one brisk (16-18 mph) and one moderate (14-16 mph). There will be a lunch stop near the end of the ride. Directions: The park is located at the intersection of I-405 and Maple Valley Hwy (SR169). Use exit #4 on I-405. Meet by the community center.

All right! Third time's a charm! The last two times I've tried this ride from this location it has rained . . . No, it's poured! 8th Annual RAMROD Training - Cle Elum to Leavenworth

For those wanting to have breakfast, we will meet at the Pancake House at Snoqualmie Pass at 7:00 am. For those wanting to skip breakfast, we will meet at the start of the ride in Cle Elum at 8:30 am. Route will take us over Swauk Pass into Leavenworth. Route back will be over Scenic Old Blewett Pass. Lunch stop in Leavenworth. Dessert at Mineral Springs before descent into Cle Elum. NOTE: Rain in Seattle DOES NOT cancel this ride. It's often dry in Cle Elum when it's raining in Seattle.
