Calendar for March 2002

Helmets are required on all Cascade Bicycle Club rides. All the rides are classified according to pace and the type of services provided by the ride leader. In order to pick the rides that suit your skills and energy level, please view the pace guidelines and ride classifications.

Cascade Bicycle Club does not sponsor or endorse any non-bicycling activities that people may participate in while on these rides. You are responsible for your conduct and decisions while on a Cascade ride.

Cascade membership and activities are open to everyone able and willing to participate in a safe and cooperative manner and in support of the purposes of the club.

It is not the practice of the Cascade Bicycle Club to exclude anyone from a club activity as long as they behave in a safe and cooperative manner.

FRUMPS: Do Bicentennial Park to Fauntleroy

We usually start this ride at Ft. Dent, (I think Ft. Dent to Fauntleroy sounds better!); however, since Ft. Dent is closed for the winter, we will have to start just a little further south at Bicentennial Park (also known as Christensen Park). Please join us; we will eat at the Saffron Cow, or if you want, you may have goodies next door at the Original Bakery in Fauntleroy. Take I-5 to I-405, take Exit 1, right on West Valley Hwy (heading south), right on Strander Blvd., cross the bridge over the Green River and turn right into the park.

Seattle Randonneurs 'Populaire'

We'll join the Seattle International Randonneurs as they kick off their season with a loop through Carnation and Fall City to Snoqualmie Falls. We'll gather for lunch at the Brewery after the ride. Find out about the sport of randonneuring (long distance cycling) and how to qualify for the next Paris-Brest-Paris in 2003. Ride may split into faster/slower groups. We will go to and from the town of Snohomish by way of Woodinville and Maltby, mostly on back roads. Stop in Snohomish for coffee or snacks.

A mostly rural ride to Orting for a snack stop and lunch. NOTE: there is limited parking at start--instead, go one block east on Main Street, and one block south on A Street to train station parking. We will check for riders there. Offered jointly with the Mountaineers so start will be 9:30 prompt!

MUMPS: Do The Lake

A fun, north Lake Washington loop ride with a food stop enroute. Join us in Kenmore, or meet us at the Coffee Crew (NE 45th St at 36th Ave NE) at approximately 10-:45, or at Pert's Deli (Leschi Park) at approximately 11:15. Distance and pace may vary to suit group. Check with leaders if the weather appears questionable.

STP/RSVP/Long Rides Prep

Each ride will begin with a 30 minute orientation by the ride leaders covering a different aspect of training and preparation you will need in order to get in shape and have a successful and enjoyable STP, RSVP or other long ride. A training ride will follow immediately afterwards, beginning at about 20 miles and becoming progressively longer. Riders are expected to be fully prepared to handle whatever Mother Nature or mechanical problems throw at us. Stanwood is approximately one hour north of Seattle, approximately 6 miles west of I-5 on Highway 532.

FRUMPS: Cycle to Black Diamond

From the Renton Community Center near Carco Theater, we will travel the Cedar River Trail east towards Maple Valley ending up in Black Diamond. Lunch at the Black Diamond Bakery before returning via several back roads. Take I-405 Exit #4 to Hwy 169 (Maple Valley), turn right into the Renton Community Center-Carco Theater.

Kids' Ride to Logboom Park

Kids, bring your parents for a bike ride. We will ride north on the Burke-Gilman Trail to Tracy Owen Station near Kenmore. We will play there for about 15 minutes and then return to Matthews Beach. If you have any questions, please call before 8:00pm.

This is a joint ride with the Mountaineers. We will explore the newly paved River Road if it is open, and have lunch in Monroe. There will be a few steep hills on this ride. Please park on side streets, not in front of the restrooms.

West Seattle to Kent

Ride will take us through White Center, Burien, Des Moines, then drop down to Kent for lunch. Return will be a flat route on Green River and Duwamish Trails. To reach the Park, take Harbor Ave exit off West Seattle Bridge, turn right on Harbor Ave, go 1 mile to Park entrance (park is on right with a red arch). Co-leader is Bill Aho, 425/641-1879.

Island Hopping - Camano

This is one of our favorite islands. Be forewarned that the hills are rolling and constant. RSVP by 3/3/02, and include home/work/fax numbers and e-mail address so leaders can send you complete pre-ride information and help to arrange carpools. Allow at least 1 1/4 hours travel time from Seattle to Camano.The entire island is rolling (or just plain steep) hills, and if the road is wet it could be quite slippery. Mountain bikers should be fine; road bikers may wish to use wider tires for this ride. Bring money for lunch and snacks. Also, bring rain jacket, head- and taillights and camera (optional). Finally, pack a change of clothing in the car for the ride home.

Bakery Fun Ride

Please join us for a fun, easy ride on the trail to our favorite bakery, Lake Forest Park Mall's Great Harvest Bread Co. Bring money for goodies! From I-405 take Exit #23 eastbound (Hwy 522 toward Monroe and Wenatchee) to the Woodinville exit. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp and go to NE 175th St (second light). Turn right again, cross the railroad tracks, and turn left at the stop sign onto Hwy 202. Pass Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery on your right and Columbia Winery, Red Hook Brewery, The Herbfarm, and Willows Lodge on your left. Cross the Sammamish River Bridge, then take the next left into the parking lot beside the softball fields-congratulations! You are at the Northshore Sports Complex.

Standard counter-clockwise route around the island. Ride has lots of hills! Lunch will be late in the ride, so bring energy food. Park in the north lot at Lincoln Park, off Fauntleroy Way, purchase ferry ticket(s) at booth, and proceed to terminal. Join us for the first Country Ride of the new season. We will ride from Snohomish to Granite Falls and return via Monroe. Beautiful spring farmlands and forests beckon you to come on this ride. Harvey Field is just about 1/4 mile south of downtown Snohomish on Airport Way. Please park in gravel portions of the lot. Bring some money for a pleasant social lunch at Pap Mia's in Monroe. That leaves only 8 flat miles back to Harvey Field.
