Calendar for February 2002

Helmets are required on all Cascade Bicycle Club rides. All the rides are classified according to pace and the type of services provided by the ride leader. In order to pick the rides that suit your skills and energy level, please view the pace guidelines and ride classifications.

Cascade Bicycle Club does not sponsor or endorse any non-bicycling activities that people may participate in while on these rides. You are responsible for your conduct and decisions while on a Cascade ride.

Cascade membership and activities are open to everyone able and willing to participate in a safe and cooperative manner and in support of the purposes of the club.

It is not the practice of the Cascade Bicycle Club to exclude anyone from a club activity as long as they behave in a safe and cooperative manner.

FRUMPS: Do south Lake Washington from Beacon Hill

We'll go down Cheasty Blvd. to Mercer Island, circle the Island weather permitting (and if we feel like it!), then on to Renton to have lunch. Return via Rainier Ave, up Carkeek Drive and Beacon Ave. Directions to start: Take Columbia Way exit off I-5. Turn left at Spokane St; go 3 blocks to Beacon Ave. S., and turn right at the fire station. Park in center of median across from the Community Center.

Kids' Ride to Logboom Park

Kids, bring your parents for a bike ride. We will ride north on the Burke-Gilman Trail to Tracy Owen Station near Kenmore. We will play there for about 15 minutes and then return to Matthews Beach. The parking lot is near NE 93rd & Sand Point Way NE. If you have questions, please call us before 8:00pm.

Groundhogs & Raw Fish

It's time for our annual (well, okay, I skipped last year) Groundhog's Day ride. We'll go chasing groundhogs through West Seattle, then return for dinner at one of the best sushi bars in town. Yes, they have cooked food too. A fun afternoon at a true moderate pace. If it rains, meet for dinner at 5:00 at Mashiko's on California Ave, south of Alaska.

A very scenic but sometimes hilly ride to Sumner via Redondo Beach. Flat return after lunch. Take Kent-Des Moines exit off I-5; go east on Hwy 516 to Kent. Turn left on Meeker St, left on Russell Road. The Park is on the right. Note: This ride begins at 9:30!

Riding to Chilly Hilly

Route and distance to be determined by group and weather. Any precipitation or serious likelihood of precipitation cancels - as will snow or black ice conditions - but not temperature. Bring nutrition - no food stop. Yes, we'll be doing more hills. Guaranteed to make Chilly Hilly a pleasant (rather than a grueling) Sunday outing.

Chilly Hilly Warm-Ups/Harder-A Darkside Development Series

Routes are a series of outs and backs, figure-8's, etc. Beginners welcome and encouraged. You are never more than 8 miles from your car. Kings and queens of the hill can do them twice! Severe weather shortens/intensifies ride. Limited services. BRING FOOD/energy drinks. Heart-rate monitors encouraged. Climb 500- to 2000-feet of vertical. Pace may be faster depending on group dynamics. Take I-90 east to Hwy 18 exit. Go left under the freeway, drive 3 miles to Railroad Ave, turn right, go 1 mile to Log Pavilion next to train station.

MUMPS: Do The Lake

A fun, north Lake Washington loop ride with a food stop enroute. Join us in Kenmore, or meet us at the Coffee Crew (NE 45th St at 36th Ave NE) at approximately 10:45, or at Pert's Deli (Leschi Park) at 11:15. Distance and pace will vary to suit group. Check with leaders if weather appears questionable.

Grease up your "Granny" gear as we tackle some of the more prominent hills of Seattle and enjoy some winter vistas. A lunch stop is guaranteed, but route depends upon weather and leader's disposition (always sunny!).

Island Hopping - Guemes & Fidalgo

Guemes Island has only about 18 miles of paved roads, so we will combine the most scenic part of Fidalgo Island (i.e. Washington Park) with this ride. Be prepared for close encounters with wildlife, including eagles and deer. Ferry terminal is located at 6th and I streets in Anacortes and our boat leaves at 10:00am. Allow 1 1/2 hours travel time from Seattle. Bring $1.25 for the 5-minute ferry ride. Call ride leaders in advance for complete pre-ride information and to arrange carpooling.

Please join us for a fun, easy ride on the Trail to our favorite bakery, Lake Forest Park Mall's Great Harvest Bread Co. Bring money for goodies! Directions to start: from I-405 take Exit #23 eastbound (Hwy 522 toward Monroe and Wenatchee) to the Woodinville exit. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp and go to NE 175th Street (second light). Turn right again, cross the railroad tracks, and turn left at the stop sign onto Hwy 202. Pass Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery on your right and Columbia Winery, Red Hook Brewery, The Herbfarm, and Willows Lodge on your left. Cross the Sammamish River Bridge, then take the next left into the parking lot beside the softball fields -- Congratulations! You are at the Northshore Sports Complex.
