Calendar for February 2001

Helmets are required on all Cascade Bicycle Club rides. All the rides are classified according to pace and the type of services provided by the ride leader.

Cascade Bicycle Club does not sponsor or endorse any non-bicycling activities that people may participate in while on these rides. You are responsible for your conduct and decisions while on a Cascade ride.

Cascade membership and activities are open to everyone able and willing to participate in a safe and cooperative manner and in support of the purposes of the club.

It is not the practice of the Cascade Bicycle Club to exclude anyone from a club activity as long as they behave in a safe and cooperative manner.

FRUMPS: Travel the South End

There are a couple of long hills to climb and a couple of short ones in the first part of this ride but after we go down 216th (thank goodness, we aren't climbing it!) the rest of the ride is mostly flat. We will lunch in Auburn. Please join us. Directions to start: From I-405 take Exit 1, North on Interurban Ave., right on Ft. Dent Way, left at traffic circle, into park. Meet by restrooms.

Wandering North

Ride to Burke Gilman Trail (exit trail at 165th) and ride North to Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Brier, Martha Lake and return. Rest stop at Logan Park and Lake Forest Park. Bring lunch or eat at Martha Lake.

Kids' Ride to Logboom Park

Kids, bring your parents for a bike ride. We will ride North on the Burke-Gilman Trail to Tracey Owen Station near Kenmore (Logboom Park). We will play there for about 15 minutes and then return to Matthews Beach. For questions please call before 8:00 PM.

Moderate paced ride. For coffee or morning treats, meet at the Lake Forest Park shopping center Starbucks or Great Harvest Bakery at 9:30. Located approximately 1/4 mile west of LBP. Please use the crosswalks to cross Lake City Way.

Riding Into Spring

Route and distance to be determined by weather. Any precipitation, or serious liklihood of precipitation cancels--as does snow or black ice conditions--but not temperature. If in doubt, call ride leader between 9-9:30 AM day of ride. Come join ride leader as he searches for the first crocuses & daffodils while preparing for Chilly Hilly. Bring food.

Hilly Ride on Bainbridge

Not the Chilly Hilly route but some of the same hills. This is a relaxed noon-time ride to get the legs in shape and is being led by a tandem. This is also a West Sound Cycling Club ride. Bakery stop at end of ride.

Snoqualmie Valley Tour de Susan

Join us for a tour of the valley through Carnation and Duvall. We'll stop for food before returning along the west valley and Union Hill. We will start as close to 9 am as possible to minimize riding in traffic along the Redmond-Fall City Road at the start of the ride.

Another Wild Goose Chase

This is a loop ride through La Conner and the lower Skagit delta, the winter home of the famous Skagit Snow Geese. We should be able to see a fair number of swans and raptors as well. The ride pace is defined by frequent stops for everything imaginable. Bring money for pastries in La Conner, binoculars optional. Take the downtown Mt. Vernon exit, head west to the Tulip smokestack and cross the bridge over the Skagit river. Turn left immediately and meet by the baseball field in Edgewater Park.

Lights required. Year-round training rides for one-day STP riders. Rides stress safety, fitness, and group riding skills. Fast pace line with some sprints from Renton to surrounding areas. Large turnout splits into faster/slower groups.

Lights required. Northend based training rides to prepare riders for STP and other rides. Large turnout splits into faster/slower groups. Usual post ride meal/drinks at the Grillhouse.

Midweek Afterwork/Afterschool Ride

Ride around Magnolia, then head to Blue Ridge area. Ride ends at Greenlake.

Alki Wednesday Night Series

Ride leaves promptly at 7:05 PM. Route varies every week. Headlights and helmets are always required. Dinner stop at Pegasus Pizza (yes, Pegasus) after the ride. Please note: starting in March, the Alki Wednesday Night Series is moving the start of the ride back to Alki. We'll be regularly going to Pegasus Pizza after the ride. Watch for new starting place in the March newsletter.

Gasworks-Cougar Mountain-Issaquah Loop

Join us for a scenic ride to Cougar Mountain. We will be riding over I-90 and taking the backroads to Cougar Mountain. We will ride up Cougar Mountain and drop down into Issaquah for a lunch stop. Route back will take us up Newport Way into Factoria and back to Gasworks. This is a great training ride for Chilly Hilly. Expect about 2500 feet of climbing on this ride. (Chilly Hilly is just over 2000 feet of climbing.)

T.T.T. (Train To Tour)

Sweeten your Sweety: Pre-Valentine's Day ride. Ride around Burien and West Seattle before going to E.B. Foote Winery for a Wine and Chocolate tasting to sweeten your sweety for Valentine's Day. If the weather is bad or you just want to socialize, come join us at the winery between 1:30 and 2:30. You can find the winery by looking at Washingtonwine.org. If you cannot look it up give them a call at (206) 242-3852 for directions. If anyone would like to lead or ride a leisure/social ride give me a call.

Tamdems encouraged! Directions: From I-5, take Hwy 2 East to 20th St SE (Hewitt Ave). Follow Hewitt to the Machias Cutoff and turn right (becomes Machias Road). Turn left on Division.

Ride from Gasworks to Red Hook Brewery (20 miles each way) along the Burke Gilman Trail, have lunch and ride back. Nice flat, fun ride.

Get out that cold weather gear and join me for an easy 1 hour ride. Good beginners ride. Limited services. Directions: Take I-90 east to Hwy 18 exit, left under freeway, 3 miles to Railroad Ave., right 1 mile to the Pavilion.

Flaming Geyser Tour de Susan

This will be a fast moderate to low brisk ride along the Green River to Auburn and Flaming Geyser Park. Bring food since there will be none at the park. The start is at Van Doren Park on Russell Road just south of 216th in Kent. Take I-5 south to Orilla Road and turn left onto Orilla. This turns into 216th. Turn right onto Russell Road immediately past Flagler Road and cross a small bridge.

Beginners, Welcome! Routes are out and back or figure 8's. Hardcore kings and queens of the hill can do climbs twice before regrouping. Rides are short and sweet (hill climbing), so bring energy food and drinks. Limited services. Directions: Take I-90 east to Hwy 18 exit, left under freeway, 3 miles to Railroad Ave., right 1 mile to the Pavilion.

A hilly but sociable ride through the Devil's Elbow to lunch at the Black Diamond Bakery. A couple of hills on the return, too! Directions to start: Take Exit #4 off of I-405; go South on Hwy 169 one block; turn right into Carco Theater/Renton Community Center. Meet near the Community Center.
