World Bicycle Relief Red-Bell 100 info night
Tuesday, May 14, 7 - 8 p.m.
REI Seattle, 222 Yale Ave. N
FREE!
Last year’s amazing inaugural World Bicycle Relief Red Bell 100 Ride was a great success. We raised over $75,000 for local youth related programs and World Bicycle Relief while riders praised the event for the high level of ride support, the incredible rural scenic roads and the gourmet food.
We’re hosting the Red-Bell 100 again this year, but like last year, we’re keeping the ridership number small and the ride experience large!
This event is quite a bit different form the usual one-days rides as we make everything plush. From the coffee at the start line to the deli food enroute and the massive party at Boundary Bay Brewery in Bellingham, you’re well taken care of. We also toss in a free ride jersey, other cool swag items and offer an optional bus ride back that same day.
The 104-mile course from Redmond to Bellingham is ideally suited for all types of riders- not too hilly for novices but with just the right amount of hills and awesome scenery to make it a fun challenge. You can sign up as a solo rider or start or join a team.
Still not convinced? Come to a special Red-Bell info night at REI! We’ll screen the premier of the World Bicycle Relief short documentary, plus a short vide on the Major Taylor Project, to show you the life-changing local and global programs that benefit from this ride. We’ll also answer your questions and share some fact and fun details about the event, as well as a few tips on how to raise the paltry $150 pledge amount. Finally, all attendees will receive a free THEO Chocolate bar!

Cascade Bicycle Club is very proud to present an evening with TWO of the true legends in the history of cycling; Phil Liggett, MBE and Paul Sherwen. Phil is universally referred to simply as "The Voice of Cycling." For those of us who watch cycling regularly, he is indeed considered royalty; someone who is totally revered and whose voice transcends the sport itself. His broadcast partner for many of these years, Paul Sherwen will be joining Phil onstage for one glorious evening you'll not want to miss!
Phil is a former amateur cyclist and active cycle advocate, and has worked as a television commentator since 1978. In addition to the many bicycle events he has covered eight summer and five winter Olympic Games for ITV, BBC, CBS and NBC. He has also worked on Thirty-Seven "Tour's de France" events, never having being home to Hertfordshire, England during the month of July since 1973!
In June 2005, he became a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honors list and in October 2007 he was given a Lifetime Achievement award by the US Hall of Fame.
Paul Sherwen is an expert cycling analyst for many of the largest cyclig events in the world; including the Tour de France, Tour of California and USA ProCycling Challenge. In 2012, Sherwen was an analyst for road and track cycling coverage at the 2012 London Olympics. Sherwen first covered the Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta and again in 2008 for the Beijing Games.
Sherwen is one of the most well-known voices in cycling, providing analysis for NBC Sports Group's coverage of various events including the Tour de France. In 2012, Sherwen called the epic three-week race for the 34th time. Paul Sherwen worked as a cycling commentator for ABC Sports' and ESPN's coverage of the Tour de France from 1991 to 2000, and served as a cycling analyst for the NBC production of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
As a professional cyclist, Sherwen was a two-time British National Cycling champion in 1986 and 1987, participated in the Tour de France seven times and raced in all major European tours and one-day classics. Covering cycling for more than 150 days each year, he spends the remainder of his time at home in Uganda, Africa with his wife, Katherine, and two children.
Seventy-five lucky V.I.P ticket buyers will get the change to enjoy an intimate pre-show meet & greet party, complimentary wine tasting from the Vin du Lac winery of Chelan, tasty hors d'oeuvres from Seattle Bagel Bakery, plus receive preferred front of the house seating for the show.

Pedaling 'Down East' Up the Coast of Maine
Tuesday, March 5, 7 p.m.
REI Seattle, 222 Yale Ave. N
FREE!
Cascade members Jeff and Louise Davis explained how to plan a perfect pedal tour to a packed house at REI last Spring. They're back, this time to share the bike adventure they themselves were planning at that time, and did this summer: a month and a half trip up the coast of Maine. They say it's one of the best they've ever done.
Jeff lived in a small town in Maine 30 years ago, but rarely got to the coast. Louise grew up outside Boston, but only visited the Maine coast once as a child. It was clearly time to explore it. Jeff and Louise will take you "Down East" as they make their way from Boston to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, with three week-long stays at very different places along the way.
They'll share back roads and beaches, hikes into the famous Maine Woods, and paddle trips along the rugged, rock-bound coast of Maine as they kept trying and trying until they found the perfect lobster dinner. Besides their usual awesome photos, they’ll also provide tips on how to do your own DIY credit-card bike tour, in Maine or elsewhere.
Despite very different economies and history, Maine and Washington share many physical attributes upper corners of the country, offshore islands, endless shoreline and evergreens and values like concern for the environment and friendliness to cyclists. Come join Jeff and Louise and see if Maine is where you want to point your bike some day.

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate diversity in bicycling, Major Taylor, and a modern day legend, Nelson Vails. Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation's Major Taylor Project is pleased to host a special evening with U.S. Cycling great Nelson Vails, on Friday February 22. Proceeds from the evening will help support the Major Taylor Project.
His story is a triumph over almost insurmountable odds. Nelson Vails was the youngest of 10 children growing up in the Harlem projects who became the first African American to win an Olympic medal in bicycling in the 1984 Track Sprint. Nelson started winning races in Central Park at a young age and worked as a New York City bicycle messenger to support his family. Nicknamed "The Cheetah", Nelson Vails rode furiously while working, trained in Central Park after work, and raced locally on weekends.
In 1981 he earned a spot on the U.S. team and raced to a gold medal in 1983 in the Pan American games in Venezuela. He represented the USA at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles where he won the silver medal in the individual 1000-meter Match Sprints, behind countryman Mark Gorski. Vails was the 1984 National Sprint Champion and National Tandem Sprint Champion in 1984, 1985 and 1986. In 1985 he earned a silver medal in the Tandem Sprint at the World Championships. In the 1980s and early 1990s he competed professionally in 6-Day circuits in Europe and in Japanese Keirin events from 1990 to 1995.
See Nelson Vails 1984 Olympic Silver Medalist "Against The Odds" on YouTube.
Diversity in Bicycling and reaching underrepresented communities in Seattle is a goal of Cascade Bicycle Club. The Major Taylor Project is that goal in action.
The Rainier Riders are a Seattle based cycling group promoting the appreciation and love of cycling, fostering camaraderie among all cyclists regardless of age, race, creed, or gender. The Rainier Riders show the beneficial impact of cycling on health and fitness issues that disproportionately affect underrepresented communities.

Tickets available in advance through

General public: $10
Myanmar (Burma) is all over the news. It is listed in several publications as one of the top travel destinations. Barack Obama recently became the first sitting US president to visit. Makes you want to go, doesn't it?
What about cycling in Myanmar? How open is the country now? Where can you travel? Is it worth the expense?
Well, Willie Weir just finished a bike trip in Burma (along with his wife Kat Marriner). They were tossed out of a monastery, and hosted by the police. They were greeted by a bazillion friendly people, and never once chased by a dog. They passed hundreds of ox carts and witnessed President Obama's motorcade zip by on the streets of Yangon.
Come see the images (Laos and Cambodia too) and hear the stories from a man who is pedaling slower, but steadier.
