The Metal Cowboy is back in the saddle at Expo with all new material to share! Saturday, March 8: 1:00. Sunday, March 9: 12:30 (Group Health Main Stage)
Portland's Joe Kurmaskie, better known as the Metal Cowboy, will make his return to Bike Expo armed with tales from his latest cross-country bike trip.
In 2007 the cowboy, his wife Beth, sons Quinn (9), Enzo (7) and baby Mateo began their summer in Vancouver Island on a three-seat tandem bicycle pulling a trail-a-bike and a fully-loaded Burley trailer. By the end of the summer, the Kurmaskie family had reconfigured their riding arrangement, crossed the Great Divide, climbed switchbacks, sailed through prairies and celebrated the first birthday of youngest son Mateo. They also compiled an impressive photo collection of North American animal droppings (the boys proved over and over the axiom: 'Everybody poops,') and swam in every public swimming pool Canada's bottom-half had to offer.
At Expo, Joe Kurmaskie will recount the stories of the epic "Adventure Dad" summer when the Kurmaskie, baby and all, crossed Canada, demonstrating as he once wrote, 'any solid adventure has, at its core, a casual disregard for good sense.'

Randonneur Bicycles
Jan Heine, publisher Bicycle Quarterly Magazine
Saturday, March 8: 2:00
Seattle's own Jan Heine is the publisher and editor of Bicycle Quarterly magazine that is widely lauded by cycling enthusiasts as the best written and most literate cycling publication available today.
Jan's talk will present the case for selecting classic the European randonneur bike design whose genesis dates from the early to mid-Twentieth century. Notable marques are from the period included legendary French constructeurs like Reyhand, Rene Herse and Alex Singer. The design's aesthetic is highlighted by its seamless integration of artistic components, utility, quality. It's a design sensibility that thumbs its nose at the modern skinny tired, ultra stiff, limited-use modern "racing" bicycle. Several American custom builders have embraced this "real-world" approach to their bikes and several examples will be on display at Bike Expo.
Jan was the fastest American finisher at the prestigious 1200 km Paris-Brest-Paris ride in 2007. He has found traditional randonneur bikes can offer the speed and precise handling of a modern racing bike, while offering the convenience of fenders, lights and the ability to carry a moderate load. Combining the best of both worlds makes these bikes ideal for supported tours, events like STP, RSVP, HPC and RAMROD as well as daytrips. It is also the perfect design for Seattle's varied bike commuting conditions.
Jan will present the history of these bikes, talk about their design and construction, and provide an outlook into the future. He also will share his in-saddle experience of what it is like to ride almost non-stop for 50 hours over 765 hilly miles as a randonneur in Paris-Brest-Paris both as a single bike rider as well as a tandem rider.
After the presentation, Jan and photographer Jean-Pierre Praderes will sign copies of their award-winning book The Golden Age of Handbuilt Bicycles.

The Rise of Carbon Fiber in Bicycling
Saturday, March 8: 4:15
By Ric Hjertberg of Full Speed Ahead
Carbon fiber is being used to create the lightest and most aerodynamic bicycles ever seen. No cycling company in the world is more associated with carbon fiber than Full Speed Ahead, the Seattle based maker of high tech racing components.
What is this trend all about? What measure fad and what measure performance? Where does carbon fiber actually come from and how are parts designed and made from it? Are there special considerations associated with its use? Ric Hjertberg, New Technology Manager for Full Speed Ahead, will lead a tour of the science, design, and fashion that surrounds this miracle material.
