Ride Leader Information
Becoming a Ride Leader
Ride leaders are the heart and soul of our Rides program. Our 200+ ride leaders keep the calendar filled throughout the year. If you have an idea for a new ride or don't see your favorite ride listed, consider joining our leaders' team.
Ride Leader Certification
Cascade members who want to be new ride leaders must attend a "ride leader certification" session, held at the office at least four times per year. See the club activity calendar for any scheduled training, or find it listed in the Cascade Courier. Contact the Ride Leader Certification Coordinator at rlcert@cascadebicycleclub.org for answers to other questions.
To become a Ride Leader Candidate you must:
- Be a current member of Cascade Bicycle Club and have reached your 18th birthday.
- Participate in at least 5 Cascade Daily rides (not events) before attending a Ride Leader certification session.
- Read and become fully acquainted with the Cascade Web Site and the Daily Rides pages under the Events and Rides Section, especially the Daily Rides Calendar, Newcomers, and Ride Leader Information.
- Become acquainted with at least one Ride Leader who can act as a mentor.
- Attend a Ride Leader Certification Session and subsequently become fully acquainted with the distributed materials.
- Become familiar with the content of the required Ride Leader Candidate Evaluation Form.
- Actively co-lead 2 or more free daily rides with a Ride Leader Mentor within 12 months of attending a Ride Leader Certification Session AFTER fulfilling steps 1-6.
- Upon the completion of 2 or more mentored co-leads send the Ride Leader Certification Coordinator
(rlcert@cascadebicycleclub.org)
a list of your qualifying ride dates and the names of the Ride Leader mentor(s) involved.
After reviewing the information from all sources the Ride Leader Candidate will be informed of certification or provided with recommendations for further training
To become a Ride Leader Mentor, a Ride Leader must:
- Be a Ride Leader for more than a year.
- Submit and lead their own rides.
- Be familiar with the Ride Leader Candidate Evaluation Form and know what is expected of the candidate and you as the mentor.
- Contact the Ride Leader Certification Coordinator
(rlcert@cascadebicycleclub.org)
and request that you be added to the Ride Leader Mentor list.
The Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation also offers classes and clinics for riders. These are highly recommended as are CPR and First Aid Classes.
Rides Library The Cascade office maintains a library of route books and maps as well as maps and cue sheets from some Cascade rides. We also hope to be putting sample routes and maps online. Ride leaders can visit the library during weekdays (9-5pm).
Rides Awards and Incentives Ride leaders are recognized for their essential services in an annual listing in the Courier, at the holiday volunteer party, and by awards and incentives which vary year to year. The current first award is a "ride leader" jersey. Ride leaders can pick up the jerseys after they have led 6 rides and promise to lead 6 more over the next year. Only 2 rides per month count toward the award tally. In addition to the awards, there is an Incentives Program (details available elsewhere to leaders) to encourage listing of rides. Ride leaders also meet quarterly for an all-expenses-paid dinner.
Rides Committee Rides committee meetings are held at the beginning of the month at the Cascade Office. Meetings are open to anyone. Contact the rides chair at cbcrides@cascadebicycleclub.org if you have a particular item that your would like to be placed on the meeting agenda.
Rides Submission/Forms/Guidelines
Cascade ride leaders may submit ride listings and obtain forms and information for leading rides below. Leaders are encouraged to submit rides online.
Submitting Rides In order to be listed in the Courier, rides are due on the first of the month prior to the month of the ride. Listing privilege is for registered Cascade ride leaders only.
