| Ride Description: |
| The weather forecast is unseasonably good for a late run up to Johnston Ridge Observatory (JRO) overlooking Mt St Helens!! The views may be fantastic - the mountain looks very craggy as it has lost the snow. This 50 mile ride starts from Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center (to avoid construction traffic down lower on the road) and heads eastward on Highway 504 to the JRO. There are limited facilities on the route so riders need to be self-contained for nutrition and hydration as well as be able to fix their own flat tires etc. Two extra tubes minimum are recommended. Please be at the Hoffstadt visitor parking lot by 0845 so we can leave at 0900 sharp. Because this ride has significant hills, this is not a stay together ride per se due to individual climbing and descending speeds. The RL is a slow climber but will get to the top! To get to Highway 504, take I-5 south from Seattle, take Exit 49 (Castle Rock), and head east on Highway 504 - the starting point is located at mile post 27. If you want more miles, at the end, you have the option to ride down to Sediment Dam and back which would add 13 miles and a few more feet of climbing. This will also be posted on Meetup.com, Cascade Free Daily Rides, for more information. For a map of the route see: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1782851 |
