The Protagonists
William F. Babcock
By 1896, Will Babcock had lived in Seattle for several years,
and had risen to the post of principal of the
T.T. Minor School. He would later become assistant
superintendant of the Seattle school system, before marrying and
returning to the midwest around 1915 to work in business. He was an avid
cyclist, at a time when cycling was a very popular pastime. Seattle
had just established its first bicycle trail, and people were beginning
to realize that this new mode of transportation offered freedom to explore
beyond the realm of the train and streetcar. Babcock had crossed
the country several times by train and had mused that it might
make an interesting journey awheel.
Indeed.
