More Diversions

On May 28, 1896 WFB writes to his brother, Charles, about his dilemma:

Dear Charles:-

I does seem as if I was having the devil's own luck. You know how much I want to make the wheel trip, but you cannot realize how much Turner and I have planned for it. We had EVERYTHING discussed and are acquainted with every crossroad, dog and cactus plant from here to Yellowstone Park, and here I am with more evidence that I ought to stay here and not go. Yesterday Layhen came out to see me and in the course of conversation asked me if I could go to the county convention. On looking the matter up we found that it will occur in August, and I told him of the wheel trip. He then told me that he wanted me at the convention, and he said that if he were successful, as he probably will be, that he could assure me of a place on the Board of Examiners.

Then again I am not well. I have been losing flesh for the past two weeks, and everyone says "How pale you look!" Which doesn't improve my health or temper, and I'm afraid I won't be in good shape to make the trip.

...

I hate to disappoint Turner. I hate to disappoint myself; I hate to lose the work as inspector during the summer and the chance for being school examiner next year.

When you answer this, write where you darn please-- I don't know where I'll be.

Will
