First Wind

In a letter dated March 14, 1896 in Seattle, Washington Mr. Babcock writes to his brother Charles about all sorts of local news. He admits that he has not had time to write his weekly letter for several weeks.

Dear Chas,

...

Easter vacation is in three weeks. Comes just at the right time for me to take the civil service examination again. Salaries here in school will collapse at the end of the year if not sooner. Haven't the least idea where the summer will find me. Ohio, California, Honolulu, Alaska are all possibilities. If I could find a partner and could find anything in it, I would start for Ohio awheel, providing school started early enough.

...

The town is full of people en route to Alaska. One would think people expected snow from the number of sleds exhibited for sale; every boat goes to Alaska loaded; gun and provision stores are doing a good business in this line. Rates to Alaska are only $10.00. ...

So Long -
