Redmond Enacts Complete Streets Ordinance
Updated September 12 2007
With inspiration and technical assistance from the Cascade Bicycle Club, Redmond has become the latest Puget Sound area city to enact complete streets legislation. Through the City Council’s unanimous vote on September 4th, 2007, the home of Microsoft joined a growing wave of communities who are enshrining their commitment to consistent bicycle and pedestrian access in law.
Here in the Puget Sound region, Cascade Bicycle Club is working steadily to secure the principles of complete streets in the laws of regional cities. One year ago, Cascade Bicycle Club helped Kirkland pass Washington State’s first complete streets ordinance. Seattle followed suit in early 2007 with encouragement by a coalition including Cascade Bicycle Club, Sierra Club, Bicycle Alliance, Transportation Choices Coalition, and Seattle Great City Initiative. Now Redmond, one of the major Eastside job centers and growing residential hubs, has joined this group of forward-looking municipalities.
Our vision is not limited to the Puget Sound region. Cascade Bicycle Club hopes that the leadership of our region will inspire Washington State and ultimately the federal government to require pedestrian and bicycle accommodations in all major road infrastructure projects. With your votes and your help, we can make that vision a reality.
"Complete streets" is the concept that our public roads should be designed for all users, including pedestrians and bicyclists. Designing roads to accommodate active transportation will ease congestion, reduce pollution, and improve public health. It is also the right thing to do. Our roads are a public asset, and complete streets legislation will insure that one group of users is not unfairly favored over another. Cascade Bicycle Club supports complete streets, and we are actively working to implement such laws in cities and towns here in the Puget Sound region.
