Council Passes Seattle Bicycle Master Plan

11/5/07

With a unanimous vote the Seattle City Council today passed the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan (BMP) -- a comprehensive roadmap toward a more bicycle-friendly city. The BMP proposes a network of bikeways to help Seattle bicyclists travel more safely and easily, including bicycle lanes, shared lanes, signed bike routes, and bicycle boulevards. Altogether, the BMP calls for over 450 miles of new bicycle facilities to be installed over the next 10 years.

In additon to the bikeway network, the BMP proposes a program of education, encouragement, and enforcement to insure that all cyclists will have the skills and knowledge they need to safely navigate the new facilities at their disposal. To that end, Cascade Bicycle Club recently learned that we have been selected by the City of Seattle to fulfill the educational component of the Bicycle Master Plan as a partner organization.

Of course, a plan is only as good as its implementation. That's why we at Cascade Bicycle Club are happy to see that the Bicycle Master Plan has an entire chapter devoted to the realization of its recommendations. The BMP identifies funding gaps and opportunities for cooperation between City agencies and citizens groups -- all of which will be critical to its ultimate sucess.

Today is a milestone in the history of bicycling in Seattle. For three years, Cascade Bicycle Club has worked with the Seattle Department of Transportation, Toole Design Group, the Mayors Citizens Advisory Group, citizen organizations, and thousands of members of the community to craft an exceptional plan. With the passage of the Bicycle Master Plan, we believe we are well on our way to transforming bicycling in Seattle.

The draft Seattle Bike Master Plan is complete and was released to the public today in a ceremony hosted by Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. Cascade Bicycle Club applauds the Seattle Department of Transportation, Mayor Nickels, Toole Design, and all the organizations and citizens who have participated in the process as we celebrate this milestone.

We are are pleased with what we have seen so far; indeed, the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan is one of the best documents of its kind in the nation. In it, the City of Seattle proposes to add about 400 miles of bicycle facilities over ten years to our current 67. With its focus on creating a safe, convenient, and functional bicycle network, the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan is poised to make bicycling a feasible transportation choice for thousands more Seattlites.

Now that the draft plan has been released, the City is inviting you, the public, to submit your thoughts about the plan in anticipation of the release of the final draft later this year. Scroll down to find a link to the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan online and the email address to which you should send your comments.

Thank you for your participation and support.

Background

In an effort to complete Seattle’s fragmented bicycle network, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) initiated the creation of a “Bike Master Plan”. This document, which is being assembled by the consultant firm Toole Design, will guide SDOT as they work to improve and connect our cycling infrastructure. Elements of the plan include the identification of opportunities to improve on-road bicycling conditions, evaluation of city policy, development of a wayfinding system, establishment of facility design guidelines, and creation of a maintenance and funding plan. The BMP is scheduled to be completed in 2007.
