Major Taylor After-School Project Instructor

Reports to: Major Taylor Project Director
Hiring date: April 5, 2009

Summary

The Major Taylor Project is an after-school youth program committed to providing bicycling skills and safety activities to youth in Seattle. We work with high school youth, in grades 9-12. The Major Taylor Project is a program of the Cascade Bicycle Club, a nonprofit organization with the mission of creating a better community through bicycling. Cascade is seeking an instructor two to three days a week for 6 weeks for our bicycle camps for 14-18 year olds. The program will run at two locations (White Center and SeaTac), each one day a week after school, and one weekend day per week, from April 17 through May 30. There is an orientation meeting, and multiple required trainings that will begin by April 9. The after school portion will take place 2:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday, though some flexibility is required. The weekend dates are Saturdays from May 2 through May 30, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The program is a great introduction to different styles of bicycling, road riding and safety, track riding at the Velodrome (taught by the MVA), and mountain biking (taught by Trips for Kids), with skill building games and light maintenance. There is the possibility to stay on for the summer session.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct and assist in developing bicycling enrichment activities for youth.
  • Monitor student progress and needs as appropriate.
  • Provide documented lesson plans for all activities.
  • Prepare students for performances or presentations as appropriate.
  • Instructors work about 3 days/wk, 2 of the days for 3 hours/day and 2 of the days (weekends) for 5 hours/day – for a total of approximately 10 hr/wk for 6 weeks.
  • Attend Cascade’s 8-hour Urban Cycling Techniques course, and a two hour volunteer training.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated involvement and commitment to the youth community.
  • Experience (volunteer/paid) working with youth.
  • Good administrative and supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bicycling activities and curriculum.
  • Experience teaching or coaching youth.
  • Ability to take Cascade instructor training prior to program
  • CPR / First Aid certified (we can provide this)
  • Bicycling experience
  • Current drivers’ license (not required)
  • 18 years or older
  • Ability to commit to all six weeks of the program
  • Ability to relate to, inspire and motivate youth
  • Outdoor leadership work experience
  • Basic bike mechanic skills

Salary & Benefits

Hourly rate DOE. Benefits are not included.

Deputy Director

Position Goals

Cascade Bicycle Club has undergone tremendous growth in programming and staffing and needs strong leadership experience to help the Club meet its ongoing and future goals. Already the nation’s largest bicycle club, Cascade is looking to expand its membership base and improve the diversity of its programs and number of communities it reaches. The Deputy Director is a critical component of drafting and realizing these larger, strategic goals. We are seeking a Deputy Director to serve as the Club’s Chief Operating Officer to the Executive Director and oversee day-to-day financial, administrative, and logistical operations. The Deputy Director reports directly to the Executive Director and functions as his surrogate as necessary. The Deputy Director also has regular interaction with the Board of Directors and its officers and will participate in key strategic decisions. A strong emphasis is placed on team building and hands-on management of key programs, as well as managing departmental heads to set and achieve important key performance indicators.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as advisor to the Executive Director in regards to organizational operations and acts in Director’s stead as necessary;
  • Provides leadership and direction in the execution of CBC’s strategic plan and the development of the Club’s Senior Leadership Team (staff) and board;
  • Responsible for day-to-day management of internal operations (i.e. the office, its administrative and support functions, IT and database systems, etc.) As such, directs and oversees the implementation of all administrative activities and programs including financial operations, personnel administrative support, management analysis, facilities supports, technological information systems, etc.;
  • Represents CBC at selected forums, conferences, and meetings;
  • Responsible for hiring, developing, and managing staff;
  • Oversees development of CBC’s annual budget and quarterly financial reports. Works with the finance director and board treasurer to ensure generally accepted accounting practices and procedures are followed.

Qualifications

  • Experience in environments with a strong focus on financial performance and metrics is critical. Ability to build new and meaningful metrics, often ‘from scratch’, and can successfully engage key, senior personnel to maximizing effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated skill and leadership in project management, organizational operations, strategic planning and capacity building;
  • Management experience with strong financial and operational skills; established record of employee development and management and processes that support growth.
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in non-profit or business management, public administration, or related field. Minimum 3-5 years work experience in non-profit management, operations or equivalent;
  • Knowledge of board development and support;
  • Team player with proven ability to supervise, mentor, motivate, appraise, and work with employees;
  • Non-profit development (e.g. direct appeals, grant writing, major gifts, donor development) and marketing/branding experience highly desired. Knowledge of local philanthropic, civic and corporate communities a plus;
  • Committed bicyclist and commitment to improving local communities for cycling, livability, and environmental health desirable.
  • Ability to work within a high-paced environment with competing demands while ensuring high quality and timely work by self and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and a wide range of people from policy makers to volunteers, to members, constituents and customers;
  • Knowledge of computer software & IT management (databases, spreadsheets, word processing, email, web. Microsoft Office and Financial Edge preferred).
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
