Cascade has been active full-time for two legislative sessions in Olympia. The 2010 election allows us to recognize some of our partners in the state legislature who are working create a more bicycle-friendly Washington, and some upstart candidates who are even out campaigning on their bikes.  Read below for a full list of endorsed candidates in the upcoming primary.

This is the first year that Cascade has reached out to candidates all across the state rather than in just the Puget Sound region. We’ve found that there is palpable energy for making bicycling a transportation choice for more people. To earn a Cascade endorsement, candidates must pass our rigorous questionnaire on how to best fund and encourage bicycling in Washington. Our ability to make progress depends on everything from laws like the Vulnerable User Bill, that ultimately make people safer on the road, to land use strategies that put our destinations close to home. Support continues to grow for a new paradigm in which bicycling plays a vital role in transportation and more healthy and livable Washington.

Is bicycling important to you when choosing who represents you? While there are undoubtedly other issues that you care about when marking your ballot, consider the candidates below, listed by district. From your city to the federal government, the choices elected officials make -- from where to dedicate revenue to the laws that affect your safety -- affect the quality of bike infrastructure in your community and the experience you have when you go for a ride. The primary election is now three weeks away, so ballots will hit mailboxes in only a few days.

You can confirm your legislative district and voter information here. Expect to see more before November’s general election as we follow up with more candidates in every corner of the state. And don't hesitate to bring matters to our attention (write a comment below) or contact candidates about issues that are important to you. We'll follow up next week with profiles of candidates in contested races.
