Bicycle Ambassador Program

Join Cascade Bicycle Club in Seattle for fun Bicycle Ambassador outreach positions to increase public awareness of bicycling programs and bicycle safety issues. Special emphasis will be on Southeast and Central West neighborhoods this summer, as part of the city of Seattle's Bike Smart program.

Attend city and county events on bicycles to educate and to spread information about safe bicycling and bicycle commuting. Distribute bicycling information to city residents by bike. Help staff summer bicycle events (bike safety rodeos for kids, fairs, community events, helmet sales) and “Bike to Market” information tables at stores. Teach classes in safe and effective bicycling and commuting.

Must have outgoing personality, bicycling experience, and be willing to initiate conversations and approach people to talk about bicycle safety. Must enjoy working with kids and doing outreach to adults. Knowledge of safe cycling and Seattle cycling desirable. Training and some equipment provided. DETAILS

15-20 hrs/week, must be able to work at least one weekend day and two weekdays per week through summer. Dates: Training in March; position runs mid April thru Aug. 30. Paid positions.

Major Taylor Project Mechanic

Cascade Bicycle Club’s Major Taylor Project is seeking a qualified bike mechanic to run a 5 Week Earn-a-Bike program for high school aged youth at the YES Foundation in White Center. The Major Taylor Project is an after-school program committed to providing bicycling skills and safety activities to a racially diverse group of youth. The mechanic will teach basic bike maintenance skills to a group of 5-10 youth including:

  • Fixing flats
  • Adjusting brakes and derailleurs
  • Replacing cables
  • Cleaning and repacking hubs
  • Adjusting headsets and bottom brackets
  • Cleaning, lubing, and (if necessary) replacing chains

Youth will each be given a donated bike to work on, and will fix them up with the assistance of the mechanic. Classes will be 2-3 hrs a week for five weeks. Position will begin in early March and run through the first week of April. Curriculum and staff support will be provided, although mechanic will have an opportunity to provide input on lesson plans. Qualified candidates will have experience working with youth as well as advanced bicycle mechanic skills.

Position pays $15/hr, benefits are not included.

Major Taylor Project Instructor

Cascade Bicycle Club’s Major Taylor Project is seeking an After School Project Instructor to lead bike rides and enrichment activities for middle and high school students in and around Seattle. The Major Taylor Project is an after-school program committed to providing bicycling skills and safety activities to a racially diverse group of youth. It provides youth with an introduction to different styles of bicycling, road riding and safety, track riding at the Velodrome (taught by the MVA), mountain biking (taught by Trips for Kids), and preparation for longer rides (Seattle to Portland, Flying Wheels). The program will run at four locations in and around Seattle, each one day a week after school, from mid-April to late July. There is an orientation meeting, and multiple required trainings that will begin by March 27th. The after school portion will typically take place from 2:15pm to 4:30pm (summer hours may differ), though some flexibility and occasional attendance of weekend events is required.

The Project Instructor will be responsible for:

  • Planning routes and leading weekly rides for groups of 10-25 youth
  • Teaching riding skills and light bicycle maintenance
  • Teaching and enforcing safe road riding techniques
  • Developing mentoring relationships with youth
  • Monitoring student progress and needs as appropriate
  • Providing documented lesson plans for all activities
  • Committing to attend all weekly ride sessions
  • Attending special events with youth as appropriate
  • Attending Cascade’s 8-hour Urban Cycling Techniques course, and a two hour volunteer training

Qualifications include:

  • Experience (volunteer/paid) working with youth, especially teaching or coaching
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bicycling activities and curriculum
  • Bicycling experience
  • Basic bike mechanic skills
  • Ability to relate to, inspire and motivate youth
  • Ability to take Cascade instructor training prior to program
  • CPR / First Aid certified (we can provide this)
  • 18 years or older
  • Ability to commit to all six weeks of the program
